jenkie5's Journal, 05 July 2012

Doctor visits aren't scored like the Olympics. There are no longer perfect 10s in gymnastics. Then why is it I feel so defeated? It took me two days to open this journal to jot down the results.

Every lab except for one came back normal. Yes, I realize that's an accomplishment considering the same tests in March came back dangerously high. (If I were in grade school, the principal would have sent a note home to my parents.)

The one the doctor wants to monitor is the ALT (liver enzyme), which she said is often symptomatic of high protein/low carb diets, and wants to follow up in September.

The best news, though, is (ahem)... she thinks there's a good chance she can take me off of my diabetes meds in September if everything remains consistent. (Oh, did I mention my random non-fasting blood sugar was 102 on Tuesday?) Quite a contrast to my other doctor telling me I needed to start insulin back in March, huh? Amazing what changes we can make when confronted with a daily needle.

Am I still bummed by the ALT test? Well, yes. But then, again, I was always an overachiever in school. Good thing I'm too old to be in the Olympics... or I'd be figuring out a way to bring back perfect 10's to gymnastics.

P.S.
Congrats to my daughter's former coach. 1 1/2 of his gymnasts are on the U.S. women's gymnastics team. (1/2 because one used to be one of his girls.) Good luck to all of them.

Congratulations! Personally, I find those improving numbers for cholesterol and blood sugar to be even more motivating than the scale. And it looks like you are doing beautifully there as well.

Congrats! Especially on the diabetes thing! What a "load" off, eh? ( just a little double entendre there...you're welcome) ;)
