I thought about getting up early and doing an eliptical workout, but the drone of the alarm lulled me back to unconsciousness. I could have, should have, would have . . . but I didn't. It wasn't my priority today, and these things only happen when I make them my priority. I may still do it tonight; I'm not sure. I have a run planned for tomorrow, and tonight is "taco night," so I don't know if I'll get back in time to get everything done and still get in a workout. I am committed to only eating 2 tacos, so my plan is to savor every morsel and take my time about it.
I don't know if it is a habit ingrained in me from my military experience, but I eat way too fast. I eat so fast, that it annoys me that my DW seems to make a career out of a meal. I know it's really me that is the wierd one here. I am just so used to shoveling it in and getting on with other things. I need to slow down at the dinner table. I always sit and visit with her until she is done eating anyway, so why in the world do I continue to shove things down the chute so fast? I know this is fascinating stuff, but heck, what else is more important than my intake delivery methods, anyway? I have tried the "put the fork down between bites" technique. You would be amazed at how fast I can eat, put the fork down, and pick it up again; it's like the patty cake - patty cake game. Take a drink in between. Yadayadayada. We've all heard it before. The more you practice, the faster you get. And honestly, there is some merit to these techniques and I really ought to practice them. But, the last thing I want to do is turn my evening meal into some kind of repetitive ritualistic production.
I have discovered the solution. You're probably going to think I'm joking. It's a paradox. You know that it takes longer to devour a heaping plate of food, than it does to eat a plate of food that is less densely populated. However, you are not a dog; if you only have a little scoop of something on your plate, you don't just inhale it and begin begging for more at the table. At least, I hope you don't. If I have just a little (especially if it's something I like), I'm going to savor it and take my time, because I know that when it's gone it's gone. So, there it is folks, if you are a glutton, like me, that throws your food down the hatch, and washes it down, and are done as fast as your kids brush their teeth, here's your answer: Populate your plate with smaller portions, (try leaving a third of white space on your plate - and don't opt for a bigger plate) and drink plenty of water.
And guys and gals, I've got to mention this. It is unreasonable to expect to lose much more than a pound a week of fat over the long haul. Usually, fluctuations bigger than that are water weight, TOM events, or other unexplained phenomenon. Before you go getting in a tither about how you just can't lose weight, logically evaluate where you are and where you started. If it's been 3 months and you've lost 12 pounds, but you haven't lost any in the last two weeks, you've still lost a pound a week! For example, I have weighed in, and said, "Holy crap, I've got to do something drastic." I may have weighed 5 or 6 pounds more than what I was expecting. So, I eat way below my RDI, run my a$$ off, and three days later, I'm down 6 pounds. Here's the question: "Can I expect a 1 pound loss per week on top of that? Answer: "NO." It doesn't work like that, and when we expect it to, we get frustrated, and "woe is me" and we binge. We are so accustomed to instant gratification, that the thought of having to take a year or more to lose the weight is unacceptable. Well, whether you like it or not, it's simple physics, and that's how it works. If you lose a lot of weight up front, don't be surprised to see the rate of loss taper off. Look at it from the long-haul perspective. As a matter of fact, a lot of nutritionalists recommend going into a "maintenance mode" for a month or so, after every 10 pounds or so of weight loss, so the body doesn't get too adjusted to your reduced intake and your activity level. Some do the 'spike' thing to jar the metabolism. Whatever the case, it's still the long-term lifestyle change that gets the best results. Sound advice for the people who are patient enough to follow it. IMHO.

very sound advice. I am the same way with eating so fast. We all know it takes our body 20 minutes to send the "im full" signal, yet I can down a meal in 5 and think, god I'm still starving...knowing well enough that my body hasn't responded yet. WHY can't we stop the cycle?! "Nothing changes, until you change. Everything changes, once you change."

So true about 'it's a lifestyle change'. You are right about the pound a week - sometimes people (me included) can loose an AVERAGE of 2 pounds - not nowthough. That's why I believe in 'short term' goals..... A month at a time, or possibly special events 4-8 weeks in between. You then know and feel, you have achieved a goal. Although I weigh in, mostly daily, I do not record it....and in fact, don't really register it ..... I do it, to see trends in my weigh loss and other stats eg BF%, visceral fat and muscle/bone. Focusing on the daily or weekly weight loss, is demotivating - our bodies don't work like that -averages are the way to go :-)

And, if I may add, pile raw veggies onto your plate. Bet even a Super Soldier would have trouble "inhaling" a bunch of raw broccoli.

I know you are right about the need to be patient with weight loss. You know, I just wish it was as easy to lose weight as it is to gain weight, LOL. I am one of those shameful people who binge when they are frustrated with their weight loss efforts. It is THAT behavior that has stalled all my attempts to lose. If I can just get the bingeing out of the equation, I will be successful. Thanks for the reminder. I always enjoy reading your journal! Have fun eating your two tacos "nice and slow." :-)

So right, patience, slowing down the intake, reducing portions. I've been on the same mantra myself, being way more selective about what goes down my gullet. I have been WILDLY rewarded, and when I think about how it's been nearly a full YEAR, it seems like such a short time, yet, I've made amazing strides. Keeping in mind that it's not a "diet" and also knowing that I can't expect to lose daily, or even weekly sometimes has helped. Being on here has been a GREAT benefit!! Thanks for your inspiration and support, DK!!

I loved it too. My bf makes a career out of a meal too. And I throw my food down the hatch and wash it down. Thanks for the thought. Definitely sound advice about the weightloss. Thanks DK. How did you get to be such a wise young man?

Thanks for the great level headed advice about unrealistic expectations. A pound a week seems more than fair. We needed your reminder about patience & common sense. Thanks - too for the help regarding "editing." I left you a note in today's journal. Toodles! (That's your term!)

CORRECTION. The bar where we ate lunch had old faded STROHS BEER signs but I don't know if they served it. I think you are right. This brand might not be manufactured. We were in the general Chicagoland area.

Oh, Darn! I searched the internet after you responded. It appears it was brewed up until sometime in 2010. But it's a bad sign when they're selling Strohs cans on eBay. :(

I remember when Stroh's was $1.99 and we stole dad's quarters to get a 6 pack (if someone would buy it for us).

Nice comments! I do the "eat veggies first" thing so I am pretty full when I dig into the carbs. I appreciated your notes about decelerated progress. Yep, feeling that too.

We have thirty-minute lunch periods during the school day so I -- too -- am accustomed to eating fast. Often I have a brown bag & eat at my desk while I continue to work -- not such a great habit because I am oblivious. My mind is focused on the task at hand rather than the delicious & healthy food.
