DairyKing's Journal, 25 June 2012

Good morning, FS World! What a glorious Monday! Set the alarm for 3:15, and got up at 3:30. Decided to take my running indoors this morning, and headed down the stairs to the treadmill, only to be met by an enormous mound of poo right in front of the door. Apparently, doggie's digestive system wasn't ready for the fat-free fig newtons I fed him yesterday. Ughhh. Cleaned it up, disinfected the area, and headed down to finish what I started. Determined not to make the same mistakes again, I decided to up the incline on the treadmill to 1.5%. It felt typical of the effort I'd been putting into my outdoor runs, so I'm going to stick with that - or higher - for a while. Jogged 3.0 miles; did the first 2.5 miles at about a 13:00 pace, and then the last 0.5 mile at a 12:00 minute pace. I like the treadmill, because of its consistency and the control it has over my pace. But, I am not going to trust it for my entire training regimen. I'm still going outside for at least one long run per week, to compare results.

This is the kind of report that my treadmill uploads to the web after each workout:

Here's the nike+ report. I would have thought my pace would have been more consistent on a treadmill; I guess I speed up and slow down more than I thought. Interesting.

Here I go again, starting to track everything that goes into my mouth. I keep saying that, but it's kind of like when you're trying to quit smoking. You can try every gimmick under the sun to take away the cravings, but you won't stop smoking until you are really serious, and you make the commitment. It's the same thing with dieting or, if you prefer, following an eating plan. If you're only half-committed - in other words, you're only going to follow this thing until you're tempted - well, guess what? You're only fooling yourself. We've all been there. I stopped logging. The weight started coming back on. I got preoccupied with other things, and told myself that I am active enough that I don't have to worry about being so meticulous about this journaling thing. Well, that's nonsense. I am predisposed to eating too much, and this has got to be a lifelong lifestyle change. It's not a quick fix. Even if, by the grace of God, I get to my goal, I know that I am always going to have to exercise discipline in making good food choices and documenting what I eat.

I know that there are all kinds of opinions out there about the reasons it's tougher for older people to lose weight. Your metabolism slows down. Well, duh; if you sit watching TV, drinking soda or beer, and eating potatoe chips after you get home from work, your metabolism is going to slow down. Older people have a number of things going against them: they generally have more money and can indulge in the things they couldn't afford before, they may have moved into a more sedentary job, or the kids are gone and they're not as active in the home anymore, TV and cable have some really addictive and entertaining stuff on there, and the internet means you can have it all without even leaving the home. They're not reasons - they are excuses. Maybe I'm just preaching to myself, but I don't buy into the theory that the older bodies can't lose the weight as easily as when younger. It was just as hard for me to lose the weight when I was younger; I was just more committed to it. There are all kinds of postings on here about what motivates you to lose the weight. I think I even have a topic dedicated to it in my group. The bottom line: your reasons for losing the weight and getting fit have to be more compelling than your reasons for sitting on your duff and stuffing your face. I am speaking to me . . . and to whomever is inclined to listen. IMHO.

Sorry about your doggie's upset tummy. Congrats again on your dedication on getting up that early to exercise. And you are right - we have all the reasons in the world to lose weight.

"They're not reasons - they are excuses" Right on! Sorry about the poo. What a sh*tty start to the day.

Love that one! "...reasons for losing weight have to be more compelling than the reason for sitting on your duff and stuffing your face." Very funny...

Nice Journal DK!

Great thoughts in that last paragraph. My husband can sympathize with the poo story... every day last week one of mine decided he forgot he was potty trained, and it wasn't digestive issues. Hope your pup feels better!!

Awww! Poor puppy! My dog gets so sad when he has an accident in house. Good job not getting derailed! "The bottom line: your reasons for losing the weight and getting fit have to be more compelling than your reasons for sitting on your duff and stuffing your face. I am speaking to me . . . and to whomever is inclined to listen. IMHO. " Well said!

So insightful yes things do change over the years, you are so right about slowing down and metabolism I just need to get off my butt and move....a big thank you.

Yuk..... Just what you need first thing in the morning. Interesting Nike+ report..... Just shows how much your stride alters
25 Jun 12 by member: Sk1nnyfuture
Yes, Sk1nny, I don't know how much stock to put in that waveform. It seems wierd that my stride is more consistent and smoother on the road than on a treadmill. Motor speed is pretty constant, and it's not like I'm near falling off the back, and having to speed up to get back where I was. Right now, I'm just treating the oscillations as unexplained events. When I get close to breaking Erika and Jess's times, I'll probably have to work on fine tuning my technique.

Interesting points about motovation. A motive -- by definition -- is a reason. One individual's reason for getting fit & losing weight can differ so greatly from another individual's reason. The way I FEEL when I slide into and out of the car motivates me and my own awareness of my increased energy levels motivate me to maintain the kind of lifestyle that gives me that energy level - no matter waht my age.
25 Jun 12 by member: wiener4
Haha, Wiener, you're too easy! I wish the way I feel when I slide in and out of a car was a compelling enough reason for me to pass on the pizza. I am more driven by the threat of type II diabetes, having to ride around in one of those scooters in Walmart, or having quadruple bypasses. I'd like to complete my bucket list before I kick the bucket. :)
25 Jun 12 by member: DairyKing
ah yes, the walmart scooter. i do look down on the folks that resort to them. what's on your bucket list? i'm afraid mine is so short, i'll finish it early and just keel over.
25 Jun 12 by member: JessWhatINeeded
He-he-he-he-he-he! You are correct. Actually I HAVE thought about those scooters. I have decided that -- in the event that I am ever incapacitated -- one of those scooters is a "must have." A (Fat) secret of mine is that on some weird & inappropriate level I am "infatuated with them" much the way I thought as a nine year old that "it" was cool to have braces, cruthches, glasses, or a plaster cast that kids in my class could sign. Those things can get up & go around the shopping mall corners! On a serious note - my grandmother was an insulin-dependent diabetic, my father was the recipient of by-pass surgery, and my grandfather had heart disease. So far the narrow focus on my bucket list is TRAVEL. Maybe the time to variate the theme is now.

Now, if they would let me cruise around Walmart with a Harley Davidson 103 cu. in. V-twin, I might re-think scooter idea. That's not likely to happen, so I'll dispense with that fantasy. Well, as far as a bucket list goes, I think one would be to run a 1st half-marathon in my 60's, Ride to Nova Scotia and back on my Harley, skateboard down the nose of President Lincoln on Mt. Rushmore, finish my 2nd Masters Degree and retire from a 3rd occupation. Just those alone will take a while. :)

"skateboard down the nose of President Lincoln on Mt. Rushmore". This is my favorite bucket list item ever.
25 Jun 12 by member: erika2633
I KNEW you were both a Harley Rider & true "Skater Dude" at heart. He-he-he-he-he-he! Of course - training for the half marathon will make you "feel fine" as you slide into and out of the car easily. Sometimes what we (I) call "motivation" is really a perk for steady work.

I hear you, loud and clear! Thanks for the great post, DK.

if you get to the Mt. Rushmore state for that item be sure too look me up. I'll take pictures, but I probably won't have money to bail you out of jail.
