I was very surprised at the amount of calories [3500] that are required just to maintain my current weight and activity level. While there are days that I blow past this level, most days, it seems, I'm well under [2500]. I set my goal to [2500] a reasonable level, I think, considering that my activity level is about to get much higher. Gym and diet start tomorrow. I've been able to maintain a healthy breakfast & snack habit through the morning, but lunch and dinner have been extremely difficult to control. I really splurge during lunch and it seems going out for dinner blows my commitment and my spirits. I need to control that. It will continue to be my biggest challenge. I have a strategy that I'm going to try next week. I'm going to bring in my own lunch to the office. That way, I'm not tempted to over eat the barfeteria lunch.

I think 2500 is extremely reasonable for your current weight. A common misconception is that you have to eat 1200 calories to lose weight, period & that's just not so. Glad you're starting a workout program too! I've been exercising religiously (both cardio & strength training) since the 2nd month of starting my weight loss & it has completely transformed my body. Even now I've compared pictures that have as little as 7 lbs between them & I can see dramatic improvements in my body composition. Congrats on committing to improving your health!
