Heidijoy's Journal, 13 June 2012

I am living a lie?!?! Today's scale was nothing short of shocking. First, I got on and it said 206.8. An new low! I was stoked. I stepped back on, just to revel in the glory. 207.0.

OK, I thought. Let's go 2 out of 3. I repositioned the scale, ensuring one of the bathroom tiles wasn't tipping it slightly. It's a digital Weight Watcher's brand, bought maybe 5 years ago from Costco. Not expensive. But it has been tracking just fine. I thought.

I step on again: 209.6. WHUCK?!?! I was 207.9 yesterday and feeling pretty good. Feeling like I earned that. And yesterday was well within my calorie max, though I did skip my workout (cause: busy, work, excuses, right foot pain, whatever, more excuses here).

So I jump on one more time. I mean - we're probably in the 207 range, right? Wrongo. I see a big fat 210.3. BIG. FAT. And here I thought I'd left that weight "decade" (the 210s) behind. Rats.

So I wait. I have a reasonable breakfast. I weigh in again at noon, pre-lunch, post-pee. 211.3. At this point, I compose the lede for my journal entry in my head: AM I LIVING A LIE?!?!

I panic a little. What's the reason? Stupid scale? Stupid TOM? Stupid water weight... but I don't remember using much salt yesterday?

I'm definitely feeling lower after this morning's temporary elation. What a bummer.

So I'm recording my last morning weigh-in (since that's when I usually do my weigh-ins, before breakfast, for consistency's sake) of 210.3.

Currently looking forward to: a 7.4 mile bike ride to pick up the kids from daycare after work
Excited about: A bike trip I planned just for me and 4.5-year-old Drew to Vancouver Island, BC, in August
Procrastinating on: Folding laundry, writing a research report at work, answering emails
Eating: A new green smoothie blend: kale, cuke, ginger, lime and frozen fruit (strawb, mango, papaya, pineapple) that is a bit more salady tasting than I'd like.

Encouragement and inspiration gratefully accepted. Tomorrow's got to be better!
210.3 lb Lost so far: 14.7 lb.    Still to go: 57.3 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

Stick with that juice you mentioned at the bottom. They can be saldy tasting, but just chug it and move on. It does your body good. If you are very consistent with it, you'll see it make a difference. If you can add more juicing into your diet through the day, even better. At least do this to get the ball rolling downhill again. Google the 21 day juice fast. It's not 21 days of just juicing, real food is incorporated. also, no excuses for skipping the exercises. None! You've got to burn more than you take in by 1500 to 2000 calories a day to lose 2 lbs a week. Excercise does that! Good luck & dont get down. You can do it!!! Sam

Stupid scale! Since you weren't able to get 2 consistent weights, I would blame it on the scale. I have weighed multiple times in the morning and if I get different weights I will get on until I see 2 weights that are the same. A 4lb. fluctuation seems unrealistic, I think. Try not to let it get you down. Kudos to you for a 7.4 mile bike ride. That is awesome!

It sounds like a faulty scale if there is that much of a discrepancy between consecutive tries. After replacing my old scale, I noticed a fluctuation during the day; so I've limited myself to once in the morning and resist the urge to take another peek. Remember, fluctuation between days doesn't mean you're gaining, especially the difference between 207 and 210. That would indicate an excess of 10,500 calories (3,500 = 1 pound)! Keep in mind that 2 quarts of water equals 2 pounds and 2 teaspoons of salt is sufficient to keep that water hanging around for a day or two. Conversely, insufficient water can retard the elimination of waste byproducts as your body burns your fat. You're on the right track. Don't allow your scale to discourage you. As my endocrinologist said to me a few weeks ago (when I was discouraged with my diet), it's how better you feel on your journey, the changes you see in your body, and the comfort in knowing you're on the road to a new you, and most importantly not what a number says on the scale. We'll get through this together! Hang in there!

Sounds like the scale is off. Might need new batteries. If you have an object you know the weight of and can test it on the scale to see if it's accurate, it will help you gauge the scales accuracy.

Scales are wily, evil things. Mine was being a terrible rascal until I replaced it. I say, take the average of the three weights and put your scale in a time-out. It should be punished.

Heidi, I would try new batteries, find an item you know the weight of, put the scale in one spot, weigh said item, heck for accuracy, then leave the scale there. I have Lund in the past that when you move it, it messes with the scales accuracy for one reason. Sorry about the weigh in...I would have recorded he first weigh-in! Lol. Stooped scale!

Uh that should be stoopit scale! ;)

@Sampoblado - I do the smoothie instead of lunch almost every weekday, and generally it's much tastier than my concoction yesterday. I agree it's a great body boost. @everyone - I love you! Thank you for the encouragement and support. The object of the game is a TREND not a daily weight change, so I totally agree that I shouldn't get bent out of shape about one weird day (today was 207.7, much more in line that my expectations) but it's a heart/mind thing. I considered replacing my scale (I'll definitely replace the batteries - thanks @ctlss) but then I realized that my GOAL is to get healthier and fitter, and that lost weight is an outcome, but not the core objective. So, regardless of the scale, I'm going to keep rockin' my diet & exercise plan. I'm off to another bike ride to get the kids tonight!
