Was it just six weeks ago I had to rest (panting, mind you!) every five minutes on my first walk in the park (April 21)? I didn't dare consider going beyond 15 minutes in one direction in case I wouldn't be able to get back to my car. Even then, I remember thinking of The Little Engine that Could and repeating its motto "I-think-I-can" almost like a mantra. Indeed, to my relief, I arrived at my car. I wonder how hard it was for the people in the parking lot not to laugh when I struggled to lift my leg to get into the SUV? (why do they have to be so high off the ground anyway?) I hope they didn't hurt themselves too badly when they collapsed on the ground laughing.
May 26 was a milestone. I made it all the way around the park, a total of 1.3 miles, albeit with three short breathers along the way. Bless those people who put the benches there. Almost like tombstones, they're engraved with phrases like "in memory of..." or "stop and smell the flowers." Perhaps I should add that to my will, except my bench will say "sit down before you collapse and don't worry... eventually you'll get back to your car."
I walked all around the park & lake three times this week (and began including a few meandering trails & even managed two days in a row) without visiting my favorite benches. However, I will miss the benches. Like old friends, I've gotten to know them by first name. But I'm sure they're happier to see me pass by.
I used to use my sciatica, pressures of work... even my infamous "I hate to sweat and can't stand the heat" as an excuse to avoid exercising. I see regulars at the park with canes and walkers, some in business attire on their lunch hour... if they can do it, so can I! On second thought, maybe they just hang around the park on the off chance they'll spot someone like me as they struggle to get back into their SUVs while panting "I-think-I-can" under their breath!
