Some Christians say that “suffering” through illness or disability, poverty or hardship, which is not persecution for Christ but just life as we know it, builds “character.”
Wow, is that true!
It creates people with fear, anxiety, bitterness, anger, confusion, depression, addiction and pain, condemnation toward self in the form of guilt and self-hatred, and condemnation toward others in the form of resentment, anger and even hatred. Often suffering in one area causes suffering in multiple areas—what started as a toothache or back pain becomes drug addiction or alcoholism. What started as fear of losing a job becomes depression and homelessness. What starts as “post-partum depression” becomes the murder of 5 children. What starts as lack or hardship over finances becomes fear, anger, jealousy and divorce. Yet people teach that our God gives us these things. That He has purpose in this. He is perfecting us and sanctifying us for heaven.
Our God is doing this?! Our God who says He IS love? Our God who says He will provide for us and through us for others? Our God who says He will never leave us or forsake us? Our God who says He is a “just” God? Our God is doing this?
Yeah, right. Where is the love it that? Where is the justice? It’s no wonder unbelievers are looking for a different god or believe there is no god and that they have to do it all themselves in a dog-eat-dog world. “Let us eat and drink,” you say, “for tomorrow we die!” (Isa.22:13b)
There are a lot of Christian “characters” around who say they “love God with all their heart,” who don’t even love themselves let alone their neighbor. Our God is being slandered, and through the mouths of well-meaning people.
Until we know how much God loves us we can’t possibly love Him with even part of our heart. Until we know how much God loved His Son Jesus we can’t possibly know how much He loves us!
How can we know how much God loves His son? We must get into the Word and we must learn to believe Jesus. Not just “in” Him, but in His words meant for us.
“Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:23-24)
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.” (Matthew 7:7-8)
“Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” (John 16:24)
