How do you set the "goal" for your calorie intake? Dr. said between 1200 and 1400 calories per day. I have some days that I am around 900 or 1000 but I do not hit the 1200 or 1400 calorie mark very often. Is the rate I am at OK, or should I add in another "snack" or so to get my calories up a bit. I have had a fairly decent weight loss so far that I am happy with. As long as I feel ok is it ok to be under the 1200 mark?

Most people on this site don't recommend going under 1200 calories a day for a woman. It does depend on your height and weight, some very short people cannot lose unless they go under 1200 cal. The reasoning being that if you consume to little calories you will lose weight in the beginning but your body will think you are starving and slow your weight loss. This also can really mess with your metabolic rate and leave you tired and make exercising more difficult. Also can you maintain this once you reach your goal weight? If you are losing lets say a pound a week at this calorie level, when you go into maintaince you will only be able to increase it by a maximum of 500 calories a day and if your metabolism has slowed you might not even be able to eat that much without gaining again.

I think that is way too low. I'm 12 lbs lighter than you and I can eat 1800-2000 calories a day and lose a pound a week. If I want to lose faster, I will go down to 1500 calories, but not lower than that. I think you could be eating so much more food for your weight. But, not sure how active you are. I have a desk job and I do 4 cardio and 2 strenth workouts per week, each about 30 minutes (or I at least try to). I think you could increase your food, just make sure it is something healthy and not empty calories.

Thank you ladies. Before my car accident last Saturday I was working out between 45-90 minutes a day alternating between hard workout and cardio. I have been loosing more than a pound per week. BUT i had realized the days I was a little higher the scales showed that I lost more. Maybe I will bump up my calories by 100 or so and see if I do better.

My personal opinion would be to increase your intake so that your daily deficit is no more than 1000 calories. You don't really get any more results going lower calories than that. And I really love food, so I want to be able to eat as much as possible while still losing weight. Its the only way I am going to stick with it long term. But you personally probably would do best with trial and error until you fine tune it. It may take a while, but hey - we've got nothing but time, right? Good luck!
