(TMI alert)
I ended up in the ER about two months ago for abdominal pain. It felt like a bladder infection but urinalysis came back negative. After many tests (ultrasound, CT scan) they said all that they could find was colitis?? I have been in remission from Crohns Disease for over 8 years and I went in for bladder pain, so IDK. So the doctor got me in with a new gastroenterologist and I am having a colonoscopy today (BTDT and the prep is the worst part!!) When I met with the gastro prior to scheduling this procedure she looked through all my past history (14 years worth of charts) and said she saw nothing that indicated that I ever had Crohns Disease.... YEA! So, a lot is hanging up in the air. *sigh*

I feel that the ER took the easy diagnosis and that I am spending a lot of money on medical care that is leading me in the wrong direction, but at this point I just want to hear what this new doc has to say. If I don't have CD it won't really change my life, just my perception of the last 8 years especially because I have not had any "flare-ups" and have been able to maintain my health.

I talked to my nurse practitioner (who I go to for "yearly exams" and who I know professionally as well) and she mentioned something that I had actually found while researching bladder pain online. Interstitial Cystitis. She suggested that if everything comes back negative and the pain continues that I go to see a urologist. GREAT! I have been reading up on treatment of this condition and quite frankly I'm not going to take the medication if it is still all experimental. I don't want to be a guinea pig, so looking on to see natural remedies first. The mayo clinic site suggests elimination of high-acid foods, carbonation, caffeine, tomatoes and artificial sweeteners. That doesn't sound too hard and something I should be doing anyway.

The thing is that taking cranberry pills helped, so I think I might be on to something. Food has healed me before. As long as they rule out other things that really need medical attention, I will just keep trying to get better on my own.

If they don't see anything with the colonoscopy they will probably tell you that you have IBS. That's what happened to me a few years ago. I know that I don't really have IBS, my issues are hormonal (thyroid, etc), but they like to use the IBS diagnosis when they don't know what the hell else it is. I don't think you are too far off the mark with the idea of food as medicine. Just keep eating foods that are minimally processed and I think that will make a huge difference. I hope you feel better soon!

Update: it is still Crohns Disease and the inflammation is spreading around so I feel it in the surrounding organs.
