Hello! I haven't been on here for quite a few months now. I joined the Army and have been through basic training and am now almost complete with my advanced training. It's been a wild ride.
As far as my diet and exercise goes...I have hit a rough patch and need some help. In basic, it was so easy to stay in shape. We were pretty active and only ate 3 meals a day. I have no idea how many calories I took in every day but it was a lot more than normal. I maintained my weight and definitely dropped some body fat from being so active. I found that the 3 meals a day actually helped my intestinal issues and I was able to stay regular and felt pretty good.
Being given back freedom to eat what I want, when I want, and how much I want has been somewhat of a disaster. I used to be SO good at being disciplined in this area- I think a combination of being away from home, being stressed, and being around a lot of people who aren't as health conscious as I am is making it much harder to resist those junk food binges. For the past month, I have been craving sugary and junky foods NONSTOP. I can go a few days eating healthy but then, right when I start to feel better, I find myself stuffing ice cream, M&Ms, and cookies down my throat.
Today I bought a journal and wrote down a challenge for myself. One solid week of eating clean foods and only 3 times a day since that seemed to really help in basic. I wrote down the pros of completing this and will keep it with me every day to read before I eat and whenever I get a craving. No matter what, after a week all that junk will still be there so if I REALLY want it after eating clean for an entire week, I'll treat myself to one thing. But my experience in the past, as with any addiction, is that the first week or so is the worst but, if you get through it, it's much easier after that.
I wouldn't be so worried about it if I didn't feel so sick all of the time. Especially since I am lactose and gluten sensitive- I get pretty messed up and uncomfortable.
Any advice would be much appreciated. I REALLY need help in this area. Especially since I think a lot of it is emotional eating. At home, this problem was much less severe.
I hope everyone is doing well and staying on track. And stay healthy!
:)

You have my support, I work on a Navy base, and we don't have a lot of healthy food options. I see the Sailor's coming in from sea, and they rush to the junk food places. So, it will be a challenge, but you can do it! There is usually a salad bar buried in their somewhere. Also, since your military I know you will be away from friends and loved ones, that will not help with the emotional eating. Hang in there! Its mind over matter.

Thank you! There is a really good wrap place here but I'm going to try to stick to food I have in my barracks room. I miss cooking so much! It's mainly at night when I get cravings so I'm going to get with a running buddy and head to the gym so I'm not tempted. :)

Wow, what a change you're in the Army...Good for you...It sounds like exercise isn't going to be a problem, so try and snack on fruits...with occasional hard candies..good luck to you ,welcome back..

Well congrats on everything. I know how you feel when I was in AIT about six years ago, I was at Fort Sam, so weekend passes made it really easy to fall off track. A journal is a great idea, but depending were you are, you might want to try and buy some of your own food items that you can take with you.
