Kathy Vanish's Journal, 31 July 2014

Yesterday was a day I just went the flow of things. In the morning, I finished my daughters school shopping as I had an 8-1/2 by 11" piece of paper with a list of stuff I have to buy her. Since it is a private catholic school, the parents supply all the paper towels, crayons, ect. I think the only thing tuition pays for is salaries.

My daughter definitely has a style all her own: Frozen character sneakers, tinker bell backpack, hello kitty lunch box, and Doc McStuffins blanket for nap time. She is so excited that we are in countdown mode. 26 days to go!

In the afternoon, I had to put out a few fires and work some, so I didn't get much done. However, I did get a 60 minute zumba workout in after dinner, because my daughter wanted to go with Daddy to see the baby cow a friend has and quote a new yard job. Now it just needs to stop raining.

I did my Zumba World Kinect Game and pick a high intensity workout. It worked everything part of my body and I felt wonderful after it was over.

Too bad I have a killer headache this morning. Ugh! I am still going to try and get a zumba workout in today sometime, so if it gets nice we can go out on the boat and cruse around and do some fishing.

I think anymore these days most schools are asking for parents to supply everything but the kitchen sink! Oh, wait, no, my son's kindergarten was remodeling the kitchen, so I think we paid for the sink too! Sorry about the headache. Maybe a little caffeine? Or have you had your water?

Most schools ask for all of that stuff because if not the teachers have to buy, I know this because my daughter is a teacher and we help her but tons of stuff for her classrom every year because it is not in the schools budget but it is stuff she needs to to teach. Go figure

You are so right Rockiesfan. I taught for 32 years, and I spent so much of my own salary the first five years. Then, fortunately, I was hired in a district that was able to purchase most of these things for students as well as teachers. I don't regret spending one dime on my precious students.

they told my son for kindergarten he needed a three ring binder with three folders. he used the folders separately and the three ring binder sat in his back unused for the whole year. we went through the trouble of putting our pics all over it with notes and whatnot so he could show his friends and if he missed us we would be there... and he said they didn't use it. I have friends who are teachers so I know they spend but I would rather be told a week before what he might need in the next week than get hit with a list all at once... $2-5 a week is easier to budget than a $80 list

Love your colorful depiction of your little girl's back to school things. We always got excited about back to school shopping too! I taught in a public school district with a vast amount of rural poverty. Many families received assistance for registration. Paying tuition was not an option. During my final school year we had 10 "snow days" and our country kids were "snowed in" for several days. They were GLAD to come back to school because - as they said, "We had nothing to eat in the house." Not because they were "snowed in" but because the first of the month had not come yet. Their best meals came from the free or reduced public school lunch program. I bought supplies, treats, prizes, and materials for many years. No complaints. I thought of these impoverished kids the other day when I read about the sociological connection between poverty and childhood obesity. So many poor kids eat "government commodity" foods. So sad. Hope your little tyke enjoys the school year!
