Gnewfry's Journal, 30 July 2014

i went over my rdi several times. i just did not want to be hungry. i ate a salad everyday until i ran out of salad fixings. i have to go to the store today. i plan to keep that up.

i bought a hula hoop, but try as i might, i cannot keep it up. i watched a bunch of videos on youtube about it, but still, no. i will keep trying. i feel a little foolish out in the yard.

i've been going to the pool pretty regularly. i am now doing the full energy aerobics instead of the arthritis group aerobics. i've not had any fibro flares. i'm encouraged by this. however, i'm exhausted. i think that thing about exercise giving you energy must be a myth. the same with the exercise high. i keep doing it because i feel better about myself when i do.

Try eating more protein to keep you fuller longer. Hopefully, your appetite with adjust. Are you getting enough calories in during the day? Maybe at 1 tsp of Light Olive Oil to your salad, and see how that works.

Please don't use the term "can't keep it up" to a man my age... LOL!!!! The hula hoop will happen as your waistline becomes more defined. Simple physics says it needs a "ledge" to stay on as it spins, that ledge being the top of your hips as your waist gets smaller. And it will!! Your fat store will start to burn away from that area and you will see more definition. In the meantime, remember that it's the movement of the hips that are the benefit. Do the hula motion even without the hoop if need be. I used to get irritated when I did not hit the step in "perfect" timing on my Wii Fit step aerobics until a trainer friend pointed out "Don't worry about the score of the video game part of it. You are making all 164 steps every time through and it's the movement that matters." I have now gotten into much better condition and my balance is much better to where I hit the perfect score 7 out of 10 times, so she was right. It's the motion and movement. So for now, don't fret about the hoop not staying on your hip line. That will come. I know the fibro can make it difficult, as I fight with a knee that needs to be replaced, but there comes a point where I just say "Rise above. Be bigger than the pain", and keep going. The overall health benefit is bigger than 45 minutes of inconvenience (which I consider pain to be). Stay with it and you'll get to where you want to be! Remember, you didn't gain all your weight in a weekend and you won't lose it that way either. I have dropped 57 pounds in 7 months. I just decided it was time, and here I am with a new dietary strategy and exercising an hour a day. I feel better now at 63 than I have in a long time. You can do it! If I can, you can.

Good show on the pool and the working on the hoop! I remember trying years ago and having the same result you're having now. I may have to give this thing a go again. Thanks for the inspiration! The neighbors won't see me but it's sure to drive the dog batty. As far as hunger....grrrr, I get ya! I'm like a fussy kid when I'm hungry. As I recall, you're more of a meal eater than a grazer, right? If so, what things really fill you up? Is there a healthier version of those things you could increase to make you feel fuller longer? Or maybe implement meals w/ some snacks that keep the hunger at bay. I'm a grazer...but most of the things I eat tend to be 75-150 cal. My "lunch" today will be spread out across about 5 hours ;-) And WTG on the loss! The activity is really paying off!

Awesome weight loss!

Make sure you're eating enough for your activity, that can cause serious exhaustion (and'll cause you to burn out quickly!).

Nice drop! You are doing great. Spreading your food out during the day might help with the feeling hungry issues. I am sure you will find a way that is best for you.

Great job on the weight loss. The hula hoop thing made me smile...I used to be able to keep multiple hoops going when I was a kid. Now I'm lucky if it goes around 3 times before falling to the ground. My grandkids get a kick out of watching me try though.

BTW - I was thrilled to see that what you're doing isn't setting off fibro flares. WIN!

Gnewfry, eventually the workouts will give you energy. It took over a year for it to happen with me. Until then, I felt tired after work outs (and still do if I work out very hard). Keep moving and you will see the results. Great job on the weight loss

If you are hungry, it may be that you would benefit from having a small meal every 2 hours. Even if it's a soup bowl of salad, a banana and a big glass of water.... shoot for 80 ounces of water every day. A lot of people don't believe it, but water CAN make you feel full. I have a 16 ounce tumbler and drink at least 5 of them a day, sometimes 6, and 2 cups of herbal tea every day as well.

thanks all. @draglist, i can't even imagine eating only 500-1000 calories! i do need to eat more protein though, definitely. and i am a meal eater, not a grazer. or i want to be a grazer, but when i do that i just get carried away, so it is better for me to eat a bigger meal. @eddie, i definitely can't push past the pain, or i will be in pain for a week! that's just how the fibromyalgia works. but i do try to get close to my limits. it's not always easy figuring out where the limits are though, but i've been lucky lately and haven't had flares. sometimes i don't even realize i'm working too hard, until later when i am paying for it. @changingme, good to hear that eventually the workouts will give me more energy.

Hi Gnewfry, awesome work at the pool, glad you have been able to increase your workout without causing a flare...it's a very tricky balancing act, isn't it? I think the hulu hoop sounds like fun, don't feel foolish...if anyone is watching, they are probably thinking they'd like to try!

I don't know why I'm seeing posts from the same people (still trying to figure out the "new" FatSecret!), but I'll comment again, in case it helps. (I just commented to you and Chris on another post). It's possible that you have problems with your adrenal glands (a result of stress). The full-fledged problem is called "adrenal fatigue" so you can look it up online. I remember when exercise used to invigorate me. Even if I didn't feel like doing it, I always felt great afterward. That's normal. But when you have adrenal fatigue, it's the opposite. I don't feel good after exercising any more...at least not anything vigorous. I feel drained. I don't say this to give you (or myself) an excuse, because gentle exercise might be very beneficial. But you need to find out what's going on and make sure you're choosing appropriate forms and intensity of exercise. If you can heal your adrenal glands (assuming that is the problem), you will eventually get to experience that exercise "high," and it's great. I remember! =) Working toward that goal myself.
