HUUUUMMMMPPPPP DAAAAAAYYY!!!

I wanted to list the things that I think contributed to me meeting my weight loss goals in hopes that it may help someone else. And please remember, this is what has worked for ME, your mileage will vary. I will post one tip per weekday.

Tip 5 of 25

Walk, walk and walk some more! It does not even need to be a fast pace. Just go as fast as you’re comfortable with. Shoot for 30 minutes at least 5 days a week and try to work up to totaling 10 miles a week or more.

There is no special equipment to buy. You can go walking almost anytime and anywhere. Walking is a totally natural motion for which we were designed. I have never seen a study proving that we were designed to sit a watch three hours of TV per night or spend 8 hours in front of a computer screen per day. Get up and get going!

Here are 17 benefits of walking by one of my favorite authorities on health, Mark Sisson.

Have a great day everyone! You can do this.

For walking, is there a play list or something that has a higher tempo? My natural pace is pretty slow (about 3 miles per hour) and I know that people tend to walk to the tempo of their music. I was thinking I might need to get some music on my phone so I could increase my speed.

Alexzwk, you can go to Rock My Run and download 1 mix per month for free (or you can pay for more downloads). They have many different genre and BPMs. I think they have an iPhone app but I have an Android phone so I just download to my computer and then put it in my iTunes.

Oh, another thing I failed to mention is that you should consider using an app to track your walks. I use one called "Run Keeper". I have used one called cardio trainer as well. All these types of apps use your phone's GPS to record your speed, distance, elevation, duration and other “trackable” stuff. I really like the run keeper app the best. It will keep track of new personal bests and send you email congratulating you on your new records. It's fun and helps keep you motivated. I just received an email today after my walk for "Longest walking duration in a month, 7 hours 52 minutes" and the month isn’t even over yet!

Thank you for this !! I recently joined a rec center here in florida with my son and I love the treadmill. Someone told me there that the treadmill can do more damage than good and doesn't get you fit because its the same motion over and over and I needed to push my body harder. To say the least I was quite discouraged because it is the one thing I truly enjoy doing and being that I haven't done much of anything since last December, Im feeling better and am proud of myself for just getting up and going like you said. So, thank you for the encouragement that I so needed!! I love reading your daily tips :)

I too am walking. theres a hanaford down the street .. there and back is about 1.4 miles and I am gone no more than 30 minutes with making my salad and all... even when I don't want a salad, I walk to the market just to walk. I always feel great when I get back

There is an app called endomondo that I have used... It maps your walk/run/ride and the elevation etc. I am not sure how accurate it is

I do a mile ever day with my dog, but we really force walk it. 12-14 minutes. In addition I do 45 minutes of step aerobics every night. Walking is great for overall toning!
