Journal # 2

I went to the gym to work that ice cream off. I got on the scale and it said 196.8, I couldn't believe it, how the hell did I gain 2.4 pounds overnight. So I did a pretty good workout, rowing machine, elliptical machine, and then the treadmill. I went back in and weighed myself again, it was 195. I had to pee so bad, when I got out I weighed myself again. This time it was 194.4. Can someone please explain how I could have gained 2 pounds overnight. Can not drinking water have that kind of effect?? If that is the case then I am going to be more aware of my drinking habits.

I am guessing the 2 pound gain came more from eating the ice cream than from not drinking enough water. But I have found that if I do have a bad eating day, and then be very strict (regarding diet and exercise) the next day, that I don't keep the extra weight. Whereas if I eat bad two days in a row... it tends to want to stick around a lot longer. In other words, congratulations on having a good workout day. Hope that the great feeling from the workout helps you remain strong from the rest of the day!!!!!

Stop obsessing about small weight changes. That's just "water weight". Your body stores glycogen as a quick energy source. Glycogen binds a lot of water so when you burn it you also get rid of the water and vice versa. That's why it seems so easy to lose the first few lbs but it gets harder once you actually start to lose fat.

It could be from different things and (if you ate way too much ice cream) or not drinking enough water (and eating too much sodium). Who knows! Just get back on plan, drink your water and keep going. When you get to goal, you won't even remember this gain.

One more thing. 2.4 lbs of fat would equal 9000 calories so it could hardly be a fat gain. Your mirror and even your trousers from when you were slimmer is a much better measure of progress.

When I eat too much sugar or too much salt I retain water really bad. Since you lost it again so fast that is what I would think it was. When you don't drink enough water your body will over compensate by retaining even more water.

I can explain it. The body is nuts. Sometimes it doesn't make sense. It all balances out in the end. Just trust that cutting back and exercising will do the trick. Of course, ice cream will always slow down the losses if it takes you above your calories, but being conscious of your goal will bring you back on track. Consistency, my friend.

I was going shopping today to buy me all kinds of exercise stuff and realized that I am already using all of those methods in my pool with three pound weights. Maybe I will wait and later get prepared for some stuff when I cant use the pool. I have lived in my house since 1986 and have a beautiful pool and I bet I have only been in it once a year. But now I am in it 3 times a day and loving it. I agree with you ,cut back on all the starchy fattening foods, eat healthy and exercise is all the gimmick we need.

Let's talk about carbs for a minute. I guess I didn't know what a carb was ,I just assumed it was a big fat doughnut, but I didn't know that most veggies have carbs in them and if you are on a low carb plan (50 carbs a day) which I am not but I plan to be soon. So I guess their are good carbs and bad carbs and veggies are the good ones , just eat the recommended servings . Fruits also have carbs and you can't over eat them. Meat has hardly any carbs depending on how it is cooked. So it should be a no brainer on what I should eat in my meal plan. Meat and veggies and since I am a diabetic most fruit has to much sugar for me except berries , so I feel I can safely add those to my menu. So now I have something to work with in planning my meals. Meat, veggies and fruit and some dairy. I can also add some dairy which I am not fond of yogurts , cheese and milk , but I do like cottage cheese and string cheese as a snack with almonds, so that will be in my plan. I love bread and that will NOT be in my plan ,neither rice , or any form of pasta . Beans ,I love them but I eat very few because to me they are to starchy but they are full of protein ,so a little is a must in my plan. I hope I am making sense to the new members on Fat Secret who don't know how to start eating in a new way ,so they can get healthy and lose the weight they want. Make a list of foods that you can eat and get creative in using them in many different dish's. I know this may not be how many of you do this but it really has helped me.

I'm going with Northernmusician's explanation. Sometimes our bodies are a bit like the stock market to me. There's a lot of intricate actions going on, 99% of which I don't understand. But if you make the good choices, stay consistent and hang in for the long haul it will pay off.

I'm starting to think its not what you ate yesterday that affects today's weight. Its what you ate 2-3 days ago that affects today's weight. I'm also so discouraged as I have been watching everything I eat & recording it as exactly as FS will allow. I have even lowered my RDI to 1300 as I struggle to get to my recommended RDI on a daily basis. My weight is up & down like a prostitutes pants!!!

What brunoguy said. I keep reading that it's not a good idea to weigh yourself daily because of these fluctuations. Too demoralizing. Better to weigh yourself weekly.
