Gnewfry's Journal, 24 July 2014

this weight doesn't reflect the struggling i have been doing. i've been having a hard time not snacking, and a hard time motivating myself to exercise. i keep sleeping through the beginning of pool time, so i have to get used to telling my husband to wake me up when he is ready to go to work. mostly i've been having trouble falling asleep, sometimes staying awake until 3 am. that's why i've been having a hard time getting up at 7:30.

i think since starting this sugar challenge, i have actually been eating more sugar than before! no beer, though. i tried a starbucks orange mango smoothie, and that was a big mistake because the sugar in it just made me all that more hungry. i get that i shouldn't eat something so sweet in the morning, it's just not playing out through my actions. like intellectually i know it, but putting it into practice is something else.

i don't know what's up with the eating. i have been hungrier. i have been making bad choices. i told myself i would make some salad and green smoothies, but the veggies sit, untouched. i have to get on that.

in other news, i have decided to take up the cello. i have my first lesson on tuesday. i don't know anything about music. and i ordered a hula hoop. i had a hard time with that because the one i wanted said it was for people between 100 and 160 pounds. the other hula hoops did not say anything about weight. i finally just ordered the one i wanted. it's wide enough so i figure it shouldn't be a problem. i hope i can keep the enthusiasm up for both of these.

you have quite the struggle indeed. But weight never reflects an internal struggle! Having said that, have you considered to put ready to take easy carbs/ sugars, that are a better choice then the refined sugar things you named... for example, fruits like apples or melon, bread or bread-like products and veggies like carrots? carbs/sugar is not your enemy, the addiction to refined sugar is!

i have been trying to eat more complex carbs, fruit and veggies. i know i should, it's just putting it into action. i really only add sugar to my tea in the morning. but i have gotten rid of the cookies and the cookie craving, thank god. i bought baby carrots, but haven't started eating them yet. i'm going to try harder.

sometimes i have my bowl of "must eats" on my lap and stare at them for ten minutes... then i sigh and stuff them into my face. eating is not all abut taste, it is about nutrition. You should not always eat what you like, but learn to eat what you must, what your body needs...

wise words!

I totally agree with puhpine. I would add that the more you'll eat the good stuff, the less you'll want to eat the bad. And the more you'll get accustomed to the good stuff, and the good stuff will taste better and better to you. Just make a pact with yourself that for this day, no junk and just good food. Or for just this morning, or afternoon. Make it till the end of the time agreed with yourself. Have you ever tried OA? , I can tell some people here go to meetings and it seems to help them. Anyway, it can't hurt...

Nice weight loss! I am not a fruit lover, from childhood, but I eat an apple and half a cup of frozen blueberries every day. I say this is my medicine and get it over with. They are part of what lowered my cholesterol, along with oatmeal every day and veggies and walking.

Even though you've been struggling, you've made enough small changes to have a good result. Celebrate that! I do get the overwhelm of it all though. Sometimes, I look at the list of things I want to change/fix/etc and it's dizzying. Not just diet either - house, wardrobe, finances, etc etc. I think sometimes it helps to look at changing just one thing. Try to be better with all things but really concentrate on changing just one thing. Sometimes it seems like once you get the change momentum going, other things start falling in place. Cool plan to take up the cello! You look like a cellist ;-)

You can make your own hoops for really cheap. go to www.hooping.org and there are lots of instructions. the trick in offsetting the weight is to add more/less sand or water.

Nice loss, I am sorry you are struggling. I think it is cool that you are taking cello lessons. Don't let this get you down, just remember Rome wasn't built in a day. You can do this :)

You can do this! The key for me has been expanding my food horizons, baking the treats I will allow myself and not bringing any "bad" food in the house. In the wee hours of the morning my diet resolve crumbles and the junk food would be down the hatch in the blink of an eye. I swear fibro makes it hard to fall asleep and makes mornings lousy. I go to the local pool in the evenings and do the exercises I learned from the from the fit classes on my own. We have to learn not to fight our limitations and learn to sneak around them!!! Hula hooping sounds like fun!!!

@nowiunderstand 12 steps groups are not for me. i don't believe in a higher power. i was forced into a 12 step group when i was recovering from depression, and it is definitely not for me. @deb, maybe i should start looking at salads as my medicine. i just choked down one. i had to eat an egg afterwards because it didn't fill me up. also, i should remember to take the fixings out of the fridge before hand because i have sensitive teeth and it is hard for me to eat cold veggies. i think after breakfast tomorrow, i will just take the fixings out of the refrigerator. i have to do the same thing with grapes and cherries. i do like fruit though. i just know it won't fill me up. @vickie i think you're right about just focusing on changing one thing. for right now, it's going to be to eat a salad every day. but it's been exercise, no sugar, no beer and diet in general this month. it does get to be a bit overwhelming. i have also been wanting to quit smoking but i decided to diet instead. my husband actually said he would rather i was fat than a smoker. so that has to happen soon. for me, not for him. i'm excited about the hula hooping and the cello. lots of changes. plus the pool and walking. at least reading here keeps me motivated. @chris, what kind of treats have you been baking??

Oh, and I have been eating chocolate protein bars that are made with black beans instead of flour, healthy morning glory muffins made with nuts and coconut, pumpkin ginger bread and things like that. I am actually finding myself eating way more than when I ate fast food, since a burger, fries and coke can easily run 1200 calories and you have to eat A LOT of fruit and vegetables to get to that number, lol. I think, personally, that if the veggies and fruit are baked, I am still eating them. As for salads, I couldn't eat them every day either, so that's why I make smoothies...if you use frozen spinach and strawberries, throw in some protein powder and top it off with water or almond milk it tastes like a milkshake. I say, drink your salads :-) Just don't look at them, with the spinach, they are green, lol. Check out the site simplegreensmoothies for a ton of combinations. I just finished drinking spinach, mango, peach, plum and strawberry with protein powder and it's yummy...just peel the peaches and plums or it will taste bitter!

Gnewfry - I have been terribly addicted to carbs for years. I just could never get satisfied no matter what I ate. I would feel hungry when I knew that I just could not possibly be hungry. To over come this overwhelming cravings I ended up going with a low carb diet. But that didn't quite do it either so I finally ended up with low carb high fat. I have to watch the protein levels or I don't lose. If I keep my carbs under 25, I eat what I want, even have Michelob Ultra (low carb beer that I actually like) occasionally. I have gradually been able to pass up tostito chips at a Mexican restuarant, hot yeast rolls at a steak house etc. I just tell my self that the slip is not worth how I will feel and that slip will start the cravings again. ITS NOT WORTH IT. Once you beat them you will not want to go back. It means a week of hell to get the sugar and carb induced cravings out of your system. The first 3 days are the worst. I eat no fruit, the sugar in it just gets me going again. I do eat lots of stir fried veggies and eggs every conceivable way. I hope some of this helps. If I can do it, you can do it.

Gnewfry - I don't intend to give up all fruit forever but until I get my glucose levels under controls I will. The best way to get my health markers in line is to lose weight. I am 60 years old and have been fighting my weight for at least 30 of it. I have tried every diet out there, some with short term success but usually starving, craving and bitchy! I have lots of family members and friends, dead, dying, or in dire health. Time is too short. I have to do what will work, work reasonably quickly, is doable in such a way that I am not starving, craving constantly and will lead me to a normal weight. At that time I intend to adjust, add back fruit, complex carbs and maintain. If I am diabetic at that point, I will deal with it but I will know that I have done everything that I could, in a way that I could to fight it. You, dear, must find your own path, the one that you are comfortable with. I have done a lot of reading and watching of experts. The South Beach or Atkins was prescribed by the husband after he had stents about 11 yrs ago. This way of eating is very near to that. From what I read you either have to have to have fat or carbs or you will have no energy. All I know is I am losing weight, and inches and feel great, have energy (but not a first). I am not judging or preaching just saying what is working for me. I try to look at some of the other journals and I usually think I could not possibly eat like this! lOL

@C67241 / Oh, I so don't agree about giving up fruit. Gnewfry has been eating fruit all of her life, but that's not the only thing she's been eating all of her life, I'm sure. So you can't really attribute her battle of weight to the fact that she eats fruits. I would agree however to maybe restrict fruit, or have fruits with lower sugar content. And, even so. I'm quite sure the body doesn't metabolise fruit the same way it would a Pepsi. In fact, there's a whole lengthy and quite laborious video on the metabolism of sugar from junk as opposed to sugar from natural foods. I just don't believe sugar is sugar and that your body doesn't know the difference. Besides, that are a lot of micro nutrients in all fruits and vegetables. The key is moderation.

rconrad, whatever works for you is good. and it's great you're not starving, craving and bitchy. i know that all too well. i'm glad you're losing inches and weight and feeling good. my path will just be different, once i figure out what my path is. best of luck to you, although it doesn't sound like you even need it. :)
