Hermiones Mom's Journal, 22 July 2014

Survived lunch at Cheesecake Factory: Teriyaki chicken with brown rice and a side of sautéed spinach. Ate half (less than half of the rice) and brought half home for another meal. It was a lot harder than usual to figure out what to eat since on the advice of the gastroenterologist, I'm off fresh fruits and veggies for a few weeks, so salads are out. Also, I'm supposed to limit dairy, and no sushi for a while either. I decided against pasts to avoid the carbs, and eliminated beef to save up my cholesterol allotment -- so by the time I got done editing down the menu, chicken teriyaki was about the only thing left! It was actually quite good, and I like that I have a leftovers meal for later in the week. Hope my calorie estimate wasn't too far off!

I found this website. http://www.cheesecakefactorynutrition.com/restaurant-nutrition-chart.php? Just for next time you might want to know. The calories on that might not be as low as you were thinking. It's the sauce, I'm sure. But I'm sure you did a little better by choosing to eat only half the rice and picking the spinach. You probably cut the calories down by 150-200? It's very hard in general but with you being on such a strict diet right now that makes it even more complicated. Maybe seafood is your best friend right now!

Yeah -- I would have gone with fish, but I've already had 3 servings of fish this week and it's only Wednesday! I'm going out to eat tomorrow night for a friend's birthday, so I will likely have fish tomorrow as well. And then I buy whatever fish is on sale at WFs on Saturday. Luckily I love fish and it's such a low-cal protein that fish -- and turkey -- and my go-to proteins.

Mmmmm, I love fish too. I wish it were a little cheaper! I realized I misread your post here. I thought you were saying you only ate half of the rice but I see you said you ate half the chicken as well. So, YEAH, all in all, you did pretty damn good especially considering your limitations right now! You got this, woman!!!

Congratulations! Cheesecake Factory can be a challenge even without the fruit and veggie restrictions. Sounds like you made really good choices and managed everything really well!

I don't find fish to be that expensive because it is so filling and there's so little waste. The lake trout was $5.99 for a pound, and I got 4 meals out of it -- one pan fried fillet, and 3 trout salad sandwiches. So that's pretty economical. I watch for what's on sale -- mostly fresh, but sometimes frozen works too. I got some mahi-mahi burgers frozen the other day for a good price... I can't imagine you don't get some good buys on local fish in Florida!

Should have had lobster and butter, and a slice of low carb (sugar free) Cheesecake.

C67241 - remember that a LCHF diet may not appeal to everyone. Not speaking for Hermoines Mom here, just more in general.

You are absolutely right, didn't mean to be presumptious!

Thanks -- C67241 and Vickie 5966 -- sometimes I feel a little defensive about this because many Atkins dieters are such devotees of this approach that they seem to be really offended that not all of us are following their path. I am trying to lower both my sugar and my cholesterol, and I feel best when my blood sugar is stable across the day. The low-glycemic approach accomplishes this goal -- It's relatively low carb, but also low fat if you make the right choices. I lost more than 50 pounds in a year doing this in 2010-11, which is pretty good for a post-menopausal, slow thyroid lady.

Thanks C67241. And I agree H-Mom! I think for all of us, what works best are the healthy foods that we enjoy and our bodies adapt to well. Those things may be different for each person here.

I guess the price of fish is relative to me. I go to Publix and there's a sale on tilapia for $6.99/lb but the regular price of chicken is $0.99/lb (depending on how much you buy). Because I need at least 2 lbs to feed the fam, it adds up SOOOO fast! Now shrimp on the other hand is almost always on sale and I LOVE it. :)

Wow -- I can't remember the last time I paid .99/pound for chicken! But I'm not good at figuring out what it would cost to feed a whole family, so it's a good thing I don't have to! You are so lucky to live next door to the shrimp fleet. We hardly ever get American shrimp here, and it's always expensive. I LOVE shrimp. So I guess we know what I'll be eating when I come visit you!
