HELP!

I had my wisdom teeth removed on Friday morning and have been drugged for days. Since tomorrow is Monday, I chose to stop taking the pain killers today because they prevent you from driving, and I'll have to do so tomorrow. Man! These extractions hurt!

I share this with you, my FatSecret cyberfriends and weight loss allies, because this means that I can only eat soft foods now. Since they had to put me under and the surgery was performed by a specialist (due to my teeth being so close to some nerve that runs along my jaw), I have these two HUMUNGOUS holes in my mouth! When I did had my top wisdom teeth extracted, the holes left were merely the size of the tooth. But these holes left from the extraction surgery are like three times as long. They are more like ovals. So this means they will take up to 6-8 weeks to close.

My nutrition has changed dramatically overnight!! Only soft foods for about two months!!! No bread, chips, meat, or any foods that require chewing. It sounds healthy, but I'm afraid I'll just eat a lot of ice cream. (o-0)

I really want to keep losing weight during this whole recovery.

If you have any tips on healthy soft food recipes, or know of any sites I can check out, I'd super appreciate any information! I've stocked my fridge with pudding, jello, soups, mac and cheese, mash potatoes, smoothies, juices, eggs and apple sauce. However, I know I'll get tired of eating the same thing.

Do you have any creative and healthy soft foods recipes you can share for post-wisdom teeth removal?

I've gone thru this recently and found what was really missing for me was protein. I got sick of sweet stuff and found myself fizzy and light headed. You may be surprised at how quickly you get tired of ice cream and puddings ;-) Some suggestions that I remember are: creamed tuna (made w/ lowfat milk and just a bit of flour), hummus, greek yogurt, add peanut butter or PB2 to smoothies, cottage cheese, quiche. Most important for me was a good protein powder. Because so much of what I was eating initially was low in protein, I was hungry but just couldn't face another bowl of pudding! Getting protein in really helped me feel better. Best of luck!

Make sure whatever you eat you are getting balanced nutrients. Puree your soups and add beans for protein. If you take vitamins, make sure you have a good multi-vitamin. A great protein shake may be needed as well. But avoid over doing it on the high carb and sugars just because they are softer foods. The healthier you eat the better your body will heal. I hope this passes soon for you.

Swish with warm salt water (2nd day after extraction), the salt will make your gums feel better. Get well soon!

Thank you! I started swishing and taking multivitamins right away. And yes, I am already getting tired of pudding, ice cream and jello, which feels so against everything I ever thought of. I mean, ice creams is my poison of choice!

I love the tips and will definitely try them out, except for tuna (since I don't eat sea food). Okay so: hummus, greek yogurt, peanut butter to smoothies, cottage cheese, quiche, protein power, add beans to soups, puree soups. Thank you everyone! This will hold me over a little longer. :)

get a blender and some protein and frozen fruits. you can make protein fruit shakes and even add some spinach or green powder. that will give you a ton of nutrients and be cold to keep your gums from swelling. Make sure the protein is high in protein and low in carbs. You will get your carbs from the fruit you add. http://www.amazon.com/Amazing-Grass-Superfood-8-5-Ounce-Container/dp/B00112ILZM is a good tasting green food powder.

Thank you. Adding spinach to smoothies sounds yummy. And mashed sweet potatoes.... yummy. This pain is making me just complain and not think straight, so I thank you very much for your suggestions. I super need them right now. Have a blessed day!

If you have a blender, put in some vanilla yogurt, some water and about 1-2 cups of greens (kale, spinach or a blend of greeens, just not salad greens), and some frozen or fresh berries. If you use flavored yogurt, skip the fruit or it will contain a lot of sugar. To make it cold, if you don't use frozen berries, you can use a few ice cubes. There are all sorts of healthy blender recipies that incorporate veggies and fruit http://healthyblenderrecipes.com/recipes. I just use the cheap blender I bought at Walmart and it works great.

When I had my teeth removed, very recently, I made parfait combinations. I put in a layer of light yogurt, about a spoonful of flavored applesauce, quick cook oatmeal, more yogurt, more applesauce, then more quick cook oatmeal. The oatmeal was soft enough and spooned out in small enough bits I could just mash it against the roof of my mouth with my tongue if I needed.

Feeling any better Diea? One other thing I thought of that I would eat occasionally is the little Laughing Cow Spreadable cheese wedges. They're very soft and melty. Pretty high in sodium but tasty. And I TOTALLY understand about the ice cream dilemma. I was quite sure I'd be able to live on ice cream and pudding for weeks. Man was that a surprise when I started to get tired of it!

Things are better, Vickie. Thank you for asking. :) I got back on the real pain killers for the weekend and have found relief. I hadn't realized I had been so grumpy until I popped my first pain killer yesterday! I've started eating a lot of food recommended here and it's pretty alright. Adding pb to smoothies has been my fav thus far. I also starting adding spinach and kale to smoothies, and blending meals. I originally thought that was uber weird, but I totally get now why people do that now. I think green smoothies with a tablespoon of peanut butter, along with the many other recommendations, are really gonna save me. I'll try the cheese, too. I've never really eaten cheese just like that, but it sounds really yummy!

Diea, good to hear you are better…and that you're back on the real pain killers at least for a few days. Hopefully giving your body a couple days of comfort will kick you past the worst part. I know you mentioned not taking them during the week due to needing to drive but would advil possibly help? I'm really happy to hear that you're feeling somewhat nourished and have a bit of variety. Dental work is a real bear to me. It's hard enough when you feel you can eat anything you darn well please - but add being health and calorie conscious to the mix AND trying to keep your energy at a good place and it becomes a bit more challenging. Hope you continue to heal at light speed!
