I don't know if I should be excited or offended. My husband got me a new scale. It measures body fat as well as weight. Of course using it the first time was an eye opener to say the least. Will have to see if this makes a difference.
247.0 lb Lost so far: 47.0 lb.    Still to go: 41.0 lb.    Diet followed 100%.
gaining 0.9 lb a week

Be excited! He's listening to you and knows you have goals. I'd only be upset if this were a birthday or Valentines day present - and the only present. I have a scale that measures all of that and was a bit depressed when I first saw the results. However, I'm now excited to see how I'll be able to better those results over time.

Excited! COuld likely mean he's onboard and (ding-ding-ding) ring the bells! He likes what he sees! :D

He is totally on board in me making positive changes. I was derailed for a while and I think this was his way to try to get me back on track. I think he was a bit disappointed that it may not work for him. He has metal plates and screws in his ankle. They said in the instructions that may affect the results. So he will have to use our old scale and then this one is mine. I still have ultimately about 90lbs to lose before I am back to a "hot mama".

Don't ignore the fact that you've lost nearly 50 lbs, Kmunson. That is definitely enough to significant changes for both of you to appreciate, Lady!

Why be offended? More often than not little things like this means "I support your efforts to be a better you" than "you need to lose more"

I wish I had that kind of support...... You're a lucky gal!

Alex...it is more that he gave me the scale after I have already been a year on the journey and it felt a bit like I hadn't accomplished so much already. I know he ONLY meant the best for me. He lost 70lbs himself in 10 months back in 2012-2013. He knows what I need to do...which is to increase my activity...which may mean that pounds may come on instead of off as I increase muscle. Muscle weighing more than fat. He was trying to make sure that I did not get discouraged during this part of the process. I love him for that. He is uber supportive and I know he means the best. That is why my emotions are torn... Becky you are sooooo right...I am totally blessed to have him in my corner. I can't fail with his guidance. I have to remember that...

It is true that you may gain muscle weight and a scale that measures bf is great. Even if it is inaccurate it will still gauge the difference up or down. Just remember that it is just a tool and they way your clothes fit (looser) is the best gauge! I've been at it for a year and my weight has fluctuated up and down close to 10 pounds. I lost a bit and then quickly gained it back and my clothes were tight. But I am doing a lot of weight lifting. I was discouraged for a minute but I stuck with it against my better judgment and the muscle I gained began helping me burn the fat. I do not weigh much less than a year ago when I started, but I am now officially down 3% body fat. Keep up the motivation! You have awesome support!

After Sherri Hill's comment I think I need to find one of these scales!!!! My weight has bounced up too and I expected my clothes to feel tighter but not so with my work clothes. I wonder how that type of scales can tell difference between fat and muscles???

Thanks Sherri. Becky the scale sends an electrical impulse through your body. Somehow the resistance it encounters when going through your body tells it how much fat you have. The more fat the more resistance, so the higher your body fat %. It is just an estimation but it is better than not knowing anything. The older you are, you have more body fat, that is normal. It uses the same electrical impedence to measure your approximate total body water. The scale also estimates your skeletal muscle mass. It is really hard to wrap your mind around all of this. Everytime you weigh in you get four numbers to look at: weight, body fat percentage, total body water percentage and muscle mass percentage. Pretty amazing stuff. Now I just have to keep track and see what happens.

You will learn to love this new scale. When I post my numbers, I will send you a PM so you can see them over time. My suggestion: Only check the fay numbers once every two weeks and use it like a normal scale the rest of the time. It's more fun to see the differences that way and the results are more dramatic. When you see my numbers for the past 5 months, you will see what I mean!

I'm sure he meant well. My husband also got me mine as a present and he only wanted to make me happy because he knew I would want one and not spend all that money on myself! Have fun seeing your improvements on it and good luck!

Thanks Dom and Njashka8...It will be interesting to see how this goes...my body fat is currently through the roof...but it did still show up on one of the charts in the manual...so I guess it is not that unusual.

First time we get on those scales we want to punch them in the face, don't we? LOL. Sure, it's an eye opener, but it's also a great tool to read progress. Do keep in mind that if you weigh in daily, those numbers will fluctuate quite a lot. It's in no way a perfect science. Keep your head calm. :)

How expensive are these?

It helped me a lot to have the body fat and muscle mass percentages available when the number wasn't changing. I don't use the smart feature on my scale very often, whenever the urge hits me, but it is nice to see that fat is heading down or muscle is heading up.

Becky, I have a Tanita BC533 scale and purchased on amazon for about $125. Shows water weight, muscle, metabolic age and a bunch of other info. Pretty shocking first time you get on, but now it's a motivation tool as I'm waiting for the numbers to get better. My buddy, Draglist, recommended it and posts his numbers daily in his journal. The manual explains how they calculate everything. Everything seems accurate and it is pretty darn accurate to my home scale on weight.

The one that Dave purchased for me retailed at $49 at a Shopko store (upper Midwest Target type store). The scales were all 50% off on Saturday when we were shopping so he paid $24.50 for it. Probably not the highest quality...but the numbers seem to make sense. It will work for my needs. I don't think I could have paid $125 for a scale without a prescription from my doctor!
