Goodafternoon my soulmate, friends, buddies and readers,

Do you know what it feels like, to stand on a ledge, spread your wings and take to the sky, to feel truly and fully free to soar on the wind of life?

I have been overweight my whole life, i was the girl that had her period every week in highschool, i was the one you never saw outside, the one in hiding, the one that thought crossing the street would take a car to get there... When i was pregnant with my boy, i had such thick feet, i could hardly walk, and that took about 5 years to subside... I did diet though, but still i hated to exercise and i hated anything that made my heartrate go up in any way... then i had pneumonia and my doctor told me i had astma, and i got the prescription medicine for that... the moment i got better and started using the medicine my life changed, suddenly i could breathe, and i realized that i was longing for breath my whole life, how was i to know that that was not how life was supposed to be?
i developed (sadly) a new problem with my foot, but i started at the gym last oktober anyways, trying my best to do all that i could, without stressing my foot too much. I got stronger, i lost some more weight. Then three week back i got special soles in my shoes. after two weeks of agonizing pains, suddenly i woke up without pain.

Today the gym was closed, and i had to think of an alternative to work out. I decided to go jogging, and jog up the mountain. (yes this is Holland, so a mountain for us would be like a small knoll for most of the world, but still quite a climb and total 2-3 km from my house to the top.
I would start and see where my legs would take me...

I am king of the mountain!

Not only did i make it, i also made it back, and my breathing and legs allowed me to go even further if i wanted to, but my foot being only one week without pain for a long long time, i did not want to stress any further. so 1 hour and 50 minutes of jogging (including a small break at the summit, rocky style)

i ran, felt so liberated and free, i was the master of all the muscles in my body, and my body was ready to be commanded, ready to listen to everything i wanted it to do. Man, that felt sooooo good you cannot imagine!

For all you who know what i am talking about, what the he-di-ho, why didn't you tell me!!!

For all you who are working on it trying to get there, work hard! give everyday everything you got and you'll get there!!!

For all those not ready yet, but amazed with what i wrote. Remember i was the one last in line, the one you did not see in the street, preferably hiding beneath a rock. I was YOU!!!

have a nice day, and live your life in freedom!!!

Awesome job, Maud! The foot pain - is that from plantar fasciitis or something else? If it is, I know you're pain. I'm pretty sure that's what I've got but haven't gone to see the doctor yet. It has been bugging me for months. I keep hoping when I lose enough weight it will go away. Either way, glad that you were able to find enough relief to jog like you did! Inspiring to say the least.

the first problem i had 8 years back (for 5 years) was in fact plantar fasciitis, it went away in combination with weight loss and a very painful injection into the foot. If you know pain, you'll take the shot believe me! But it was the only time in my life i scolded a doctor! After walking on my frontfoot for 5 years i sadly developed the so called sagged front-foot... (women in heels problem) and that took me a year, it is a bit less painfull then plantar fasciitis but painful enough not to want to put weight on it... My advice: go to a doctor, because of the pain you start walk different and cause other parts of your body to strain, like your front-foot or your knees and back!!!

With the gym being closed today, you could have easily said you were taking the day off. Just goes to show that you're in a new mindset and committed! Way to go with the alternative form of exercise!

I, too, am an asthmatic. I've always had allergies and used inhalers as a child. I was a pudgy kid. When I was 16 I leaned out and, while the allergies persisted, I no longer had asthmatic responses. I was free. I was able to do what I wanted without a problem. I did a lot of swimming. Then I got married, and she can cook. :(( (Her fault, lol. No.) I put on the weight. I started having breathing issues again, but I was in denial. I finally went to a doctor and he said "You have asthma." :( I was still in denial. I told him he was wrong, but he gave me a sample inhaler. Salbutamol. I walked out of his office, decided to take a puff to prove him wrong, and instantly began breathing easy. It was back. I did some research and discovered that most people cycled through periods of asthma and asthma free times during their life. It sucked. Then I lost weight the first time in my 40s, and it was gone. Then I gained the weight back, and it was back. Then I lost it again (this time) and it's gone. I know it won't be this way for every asthmatic, but consider this for a moment. The diaphragm has to work against the weight of the chest cavity, including visceral fat. This will restrict depth in your breathing. Any weight around the middle will also have to be fought by the diaphragm to breath, again restricting the depth of our breath. Many asthmatics do not sleep on their backs for one simple reason... it's harder to rest comfortably when the diaphragm has to lift the stomach. It sounds a little crazy, but the logic is sound. I believe that with shallow breathing you actually set yourself up for asthma. Shallow breathing means incomplete exhaling of waste from the lungs and that's why the inhalers work. They force the bronchi open and allow the expulsion of the waste and reduce the resultant inflammation. Overweight asthmatics are common. Lean asthmatics are fewer in numbers. Live healthy my friends.

That is such an encouraging story! I wish mine had had the same happy ending. I get out of breath very easily and no amount of trying to work up to running has ever worked, despite trying an inhaler. I'm so glad that it worked for you! I still exercise, but get "hot and bothered" easily. A trip up the knoll/hill sounds like a delightful way to spend Easter.

I love Leslie Sansone on youtube and just discovered Jessica Smith and Fitness Blender on Youtube. Why didnt anyone tell me???? Fabulous. Mini walking workout while stuff cooked today. Then a nap. :). But it sounds like you have it covered. Take pics.

I think often when it comes to asthma, people often try to do too much too quickly. There's no shame in walking 20 feet farther than yesterday. Exercise induced reactions in asthmatics is common. It was horrible when I was 230 pounds. Now, it's generally not an issue. I use an inhaler maybe a couple of times a year when I feel I may be getting a cold or having an allergic reaction. It keeps the lungs from getting too inflamed and saves me days of misery. When I need it, I use it. When I don't, I often don't even carry it. I also think there are two types of asthmatics. Those who would have it regardless off weight (though shedding weight takes pressure off the diaphragm) and those who can control it well by watching their weight and staying away from environmental triggers, including foods that don't agree with them. Dairy was often an issue with me.

Thanks for writing, Maud. I can identify your asthma with my getting the first pair of glasses as an adult! (Even thnough I'd been checked, my astigmatism had never been caught). It was Christmastime and everything was lit up and I was just amazed at what I'd been missing all twinkly and glittery. So this was the magic of Christmas. And now I want to finally see what my body is like at a normal height and weight, unencumbered by aching knees and back. I feel it will be another awakening. I appreciate your encouragement.

Hey LuC2. Are you like me? You didn't realize that colours actually separated? No wonder I kept getting Fs when they told me to colour inside the lines. :(

LOL, yes, Northern! Luckily my last name started B-a" so I was usually toward the front of the classroom. But Math was awful with all the little 'carried' numbers on the blackboard and whatnot! Seemed like all that white chalk on black would be vibrating! (How in the heck did I pass the eye test every year? LOL) Right after getting my glasses, my husband and I visited a few places we'd always gone and I kept remarking about sheen in the curtains, or the pattern in the carpet, etc. He finally said, "Babe, this stuff has always looked like this. They've had these same curtains for yrs." My glasses really did usher in a whole new world. Every color was so sharp!
