pioneermom's Journal, 16 April 2014

Today I am really thankful beyond words for the support of my 15 year old son with this health/weight journey. He has the same fatal attraction for sweets and processed foods I have and I have often used him as my excuse to keep my trigger foods in the house. Now, though, he is suddenly completely on board with getting healthy with me and is telling me NOT to buy cupcakes or ice cream (believe me this has NEVER happened before) and together we picked out some fresh berries today and ate them together in the car. It was really a total shift in direction for us, because we have both always just been total carb addicts. Knowing I am setting a recovery example for him motivates me to keep going even when it is hard and doesn't feel worth it. He wants to be in the Navy and will need a strong body nourished by healthy foods to thrive in that environment. Today, I dedicate my health journey to him, my precious son, who needs a mother who is a better role model than I have been for most of my life in this area.

My son is 14 and he is a total foodie - it's not a problem for him yet but I worry since he is not selective in food choices. Way to go in you being a great role model for your son!

Thank you. It has been a long time coming. I hope it isn't too late for him because I have certainly not set a good example, but I think we are both ready to help each other do better now.

Good for both of you! My son is 16 now but I noticed a year or two ago that he was asking to take lunch to school instead of eating school food. I'm not sure if it is because he naturally wanted the healthier foods (he has always been a veggie lover, and eaten well). It might have had to do with Health class too. I think his teacher went over a bit more nutrition than the regular curriculum would cover.

I hope it's not too late for my two as well! Been a few weeks without processed treats for them (I never was a big eater of them). But the natives -- hubby and kids -- can sometimes grow quite restless. Some days the negativity gets to be a bit much and I just leave them to themselves (LOL)! Only problem is, the next day there are no walnuts for my oatmeal or soy milk for after my workout or bananas for a snack. Seems they all go on cruise control for everything regardless of what a 'portion' really is... Oh well, c'est la vie...
