Raineeee's Journal, 16 April 2014

I honestly have no idea how I gained the weight as I've been sticking to Atkins really well.

I've been adding fibre to my food and taking water retention tablets as well as checking myself everyday with ketostix to make sure I'm on the right track - they were always bright pink, so I haven't done anything wrong.

Yet I've somehow gained weight.

As of today, I'm giving up Atkins. I'm the same weight now as I was 2 weeks ago, and I've given up everything I love to eat in exchange for gaining weight. This diet worked for a little while, but I feel it's just not for me.

I came out of ketosis a few hours ago and I feel I can think A LOT clearer + I generally feel better in myself.

I'm going to start calorie counting and intermittent fasting tomorrow, so I don't fall completely off the wagon, while still keeping my carbs low but not so low that I go into ketosis.

I've learned a lot doing Atkins and I genuinely respect the diet. I won't turn my back to it completely.

Onwards and upwards.

If it isn't something you could stick with long term than it wasn't the right plan for you anyway, even if you would have gotten epic results. I have lost close to one hundred pounds while eating normally, simply calorie counting and exercising. Pick a plan that you can truly live with and the results will follow. Best of luck to you!

Yes, I could never stick to it long-term anyway as it always felt a little bit extreme, ahh well, I gave the diet a chance. Well done with your weight loss, I absolutely envy you!! I'll have to make exercise my friend again, haha. Thank you for commenting! :)

Don't envy me, I'm just a normal girl who kept getting back up when she fell :-)

Totally agree with Yolanda here. I'm planning on another 40 years or so on this planet and realize that I had to find a way to eat that I could do every day for the next 40 years. I'm being a bit more restricted with calories right now to drop the lbs, but I can honestly say this feels sustainable. For the water retention, have you tried Green or herbal teas? I swear they act as a major diuretic for me and a few other people I know. Hopefully it might get things running again for you.

Make sure and drink enough water. I will gain weight if I don't drink enough water because then you are holding water. When you drink enough, it flushes excesses water out.

Thanks guys! I suffer with water retention like a b**** so every little helps. You reminded me that I have some green tea hidden away somewhere, so I'll drink some of that today. I don't drink as much water as I probably should (I think you have to drink more if you're overweight?), so I'll 'up' the water drinking. I'll get there one way or another. The support on this website is phenomenal.

I was on the zone for the first 40 pounds or so. It worked well. Then it all stalled. It was just too variable given you didn't really count calories. Calories put me back on track. It's important to be dedicated and to have as little variance in your approach as possible, but it's easy to 'believe' in a diet or get so attached to a diet that you can't see past it. You have to stay real. When things quit working, you have to change it up. One of my favourite quotations is "Everything works... for about 10 weeks."

Northernmusician - Well done with the weight loss! Yeah, I believe changing diets after a while makes stalling a lot less likely. I guess that's why people change their diet so often, because their body gets too used to the same thing! I WILL try to stay real :) Draglist - Thank you and well done! :) Calorie counting and IF definitely sounds like my thing, I also hope I have the same success as you. Fingers crossed.

Yes, losing weight is a great accomplishment. I think the trick is to do it in a healthy way so once we lose what we don't need we will maintain it by learning to avoid over-eating as I did with gusto for the wonderful eight years I had with a man looked great (he was busy all the time) but bad hearts can kill even those who look as good as Jim Fixx. This website sure helps me with tracking what I eat. We can do this.
