pioneermom's Journal, 15 April 2014

I just logged in and changed my goal weight. I had recorded it as 120 pounds and now it is 130. I originally put 120 pounds because my weight doctor and my husband thought that was my ideal weight. Some chart says that is my ideal weight. But, you know what? As a woman who has lived in this skin for 45 years with adult weights ranging from a low of 110 to a current high of 165, I know myself better than anyone else, particularly anyone else male. I am not male bashing here, but something about having a guy who has never been pregnant, hormonal, perimenopausal, etc....tell me what I should weigh just does not feel good to me today. So, today my goal weight is reset to MY GOAL WEIGHT not anybody else's. After my daughter was born, I weighed about 130 for a couple of years and I felt fabulous at that weight. Curvier than at my thinnest, about a size 8, and just totally womanly and soft but not over the line. I want to feel that way again, lovely and curvy and confident. I remember 120 well, since I weighed that from ages 18-27 and I think I was a tad too lean. It may not seem like such a big deal to anyone else, but to me, it feels very important to establish that what I feel about my body is more important than what anyone else tries to make me believe.

Most definitely! I too have a weight that I feel comfortable at and I don't care what my doctor tells me or some chart. Besides, they need to be happy with the downward curve, not just the ultimate number. In other words, I'll be doing better than I have for the last 5 years!

Those stupid charts are so inaccurate! They don't know anything about the person or the way our bodies work. My "ideal" weight makes me catch every single cold/flu that comes by. You know what works best so you go for it!

My goal weight right now is still 6lbs from "normal weight" according to BMI charts...but I chose it because I felt good at that weight, healthy, strong and attractive when I weighed that before. I always can get there and change my goal to a lower number, but if I dont, I will be at a good weight for me regardless. I think you choosing your own goal is what SHOULD be happening-YOU are in control!!!

Agree with the other posters. I do believe you know your baseline better than anyone! My current goal is 145, but I've told myself and husband that I will see what I look like and how I feel in the 100s before I figure out where I should be on the scale (most charts say anything from 95-120 lbs)! Jada Pinkett Smith, Eva Longoria, Reese Witherspoon and Kim Kardashian, are all about 5'2" (as am I) but have very different body types, builds and bone structures AND, consequently, a 40-lb weight diff among them! Obviously, you have to find what's right for you.

Kim Kardashian is 5'2"?!? shocked!! I'm 5'2" and 120ish, but have a tummy pooch... I felt that same sting you're talking about, when I told my husband I want to lose a few lbs, I was talking about losing 5 down to 115, but he says to me "yeah, maybe get down to about 110, but you don't want to go lower than that"... um... 110?! Made me angry, but in this sick sick mind, I will try to get down to 110, sad to say...

YOU ROCK!!!!! Seriously, you rock HARD! My current goal is an interim one. Truthfully, I don't even have a final goal. I recall a weight I was at after a prior diet. I felt strong and healthy. I moved easily and filled out a sweater and jeans nicely ;-) That number was "overweight" as of the weight charts. And ya know what, when I get to that number this time, if I feel good then that's when I'm done. A toast to all of us for being realistic and honest with our fabulous female selves!
