Earthlady's Journal, 24 November 2013

I've taken a couple of days off recording my food intake - a bad idea, I know, but the scale is going up again and I just want to get this weekend out of the way without thinking about calories.

We had our annual Teachers' Day dinner on Friday evening and yesterday I pushed the boat out at home as my daughter is home from İstanbul for the weekend. We had a pasta dish with wine and chocolate fondant soufflés to follow - not exactly diet food!

This morning we had bacon and eggs - a rare treat as we can't normally get pork products but İstanbul supermarkets do cater more for foreigners especially in the more cosmopolitan areas so daughter literally brought home the bacon!

Next week I need to rethink somehow. I'm on 1500 calories a day, fairly active at work and walking for at least an hour a day but this is not enough to get the scales moving and in fact they're going in the wrong direction. I think I need to up the exercise and somehow fit in shorter bursts of activity throughout the day.

I teach between 2 and 5 classes a day and I never sit down while teaching. I make a point of walking around the school several times a day, up and down stairs and along corridors, just to stretch and get a change of scenery. The rest of my school time, though, I'm sitting at my desk, mostly in front of the computer or having meetings.

I usually walk home from school. I walk fast and it takes 40 to 45 minutes so I'd say it's a little under 3 miles, up and downhill, from one side of town to the other.

When I get home I usually do about an hour's housework and prepare a meal then I'm usually sitting through the rest of the evening (an hour or two) before I go to bed.

I think I need to fit in more weight-bearing exercise - maybe 20 minutes morning and evening. This should keep muscle built up and help my metabolism to work harder and for longer.
