DairyKing's Journal, 22 August 2012

Good morning, FS Buddies. Can't stay long. Spent most of the night in the hospital with DD (Step-daughter). Apparently, she had a heart attack Monday when DW and she went for the chemo treatment. I knew they were both feeling bad, but had no idea how bad. DW took her into local hospital yesterday, and shortly after I got there, they took her by ambulance to the hospital in the big city. She went directly to ER where they did an angiogram, put 2 stints in, and a balloon with medicine to clear a blood clot. She seems to be doing fine now; they never put her under or anything. They just went right to work, so there really wasn't any recovery from anethesia or anything. She felt better right away. She has what they call factor 5 blood; it's too thick. So, she stays on cuminen all the time (don't know if I spelled that right or not). She quit taking the cuminen, she smokes, she's supposed to be on a gluten-free diet - she isn't. She is now. Hopefully, this scare will be her wake-up call. She's only 45. We should learn more about the extent of the damage today. I think she's going to be all right. Just wanted you guys to know, so you wouldn't think I was mad at you, and avoiding you. :)

Oh DK that is awful for your step daughter - you would think with such a good example as yourself she would know better!! Hopefully she sees the light and changes her lifestyle for the better.

Oh, that is horrible! And 45 is so young for that. If it is not a wake up call for her, surely I'll view it as one for me.

Oh that is a scary event for someone so young! It reinforces everyone's need to pay attention to our own body's signals about what iit needs. I hope all turns out positive. I will be thinking of you, DW and DD.

oh wow. glad they caught it and got her fixed up. Coumadin is what my grandma had to take to thin her blood.

Oh my goodness. That age is young for a heart attack. Thinking of you and yours. God bless your family!

Thanks all! I'm going back to work in the morning. It appears it's going to take a while to get her blodd pressure and oxygen dialed in - probably because of all the meds they give her, but she seems to be doing pretty well. Has to go through cardiac rehab with a monitor after she is released. Could be tomorrow afternoon.

So scary! You have an awful lot on your shoulders right now. Glad you could share it here, and get some love and support. Hope she takes the warning seriously.

Just catching up on this, DK. I'm so sorry for your stepdaughter and, especially, your wife. This has to be terribly stressful for her. What does your stepdaughter need to do in order to have a healthier lifestyle?

Well, Heather, it really isn't that complicated. She can add years to her life by participating in the cardio rehab, continuing to take her coumadin, and eat a gluten free diet. She has the meds. She just needs to have a little discipline.
