Everyone has their own mountain to climb. Here are some pictures... this was mine.

At the beginning of April, my husband and I visited a possible venue for our daughter's wedding. We walked down the pathway to the gazebo, but by the time I reached the foot of it, I was out of breath and there was an alarming tightening and pain in my chest. To my chagrin, I never made it to the top. With a then blood pressure of over 200 systolic and carrying 36 pounds of extra weight, not surprising.

Over the course of the next several months, I worried I would be the blemish to an otherwise perfect wedding day for our only child. I even considered calling the hotel to inquire about accommodations for handicapped guests who were unable to climb to the top.

Not in anyone's wildest imagination would someone call this a mountain or even a hill. But it was my personal Everest.

In preparation to meet with the florist, we made a return visit yesterday. Since they only have valet parking there, I promised I'd only be two seconds. In my haste to quickly snap a few pictures, I sprinted over to the gazebo, took the snapshots, and ran back to the car.

I glanced over to my husband, and all he said was "Piece of cake, wasn't it?"

Yes, it was a piece of cake!

On the drive home, I was thinking mountains are meant to be conquered... one exercise at a time and one meal at a time. Oh, and I was also thinking soon I will definitely have a splurge day and actually eat a piece of cake.

Now, if someone can help me with the next mole hill... how to wear heels all day and not have sore feet!

It's great that you took that challenge. Everyone has their own challenges, whether it be walking up a hill or stairs, or an actual mountain, or with changing their eating habits, so we should all take a step back and look at what we've accomplished. It will be great for you to have that cake at your daughter's wedding. The heels, now that's a whole different challenge. I don't know that you can wear them all day without your feet hurting, I know I can't. :)

Your posts always bring a smile to my face! What a motivating story, one I will try to recall when I face my own challenges. I'm excited for you and the upcoming milestone for your daughter. As to wearing heels...well, I would bring a spare pair of more comfortable shoes if I were you. After the "official" part (and pictures), no one is going to care what shoes you're celebrating in, right? Of course, I'm a barefoot or flip-flop girl myself.

What a great story! You have every reason to be proud of your accomplishments! As for the heels, I'd skip them altogether, in favor of comfort ;)

OH - What a wonderful sense of accomplishment and celebration! That is so very exciting and the venue looks very elegant. I am so happy to hear you blood pressure is better now - it is better, right? I would rely on a shoe brand well known for comfort when picking wedding day shoes - Naturalizer makes tons of styles including high heels, sling backs, wedges, etc.

I love Sofft and Born for their cute styles and comfort; both are at DSW and Nordstom Rack at a reasonable price. I also have a two-shoe rule for weddings (including my own): one pair of heels for pics and the ceremony, the other for dancing all night! By then, nobody is looking at your feet, they'll just see your radiant smile. Congratulations!!!!

Beautiful! I am so very happy for you. I am glad you got to have this moment on a day other than your daughter's wedding. You were able to really inhabit that moment, and realize fully how far you came. Bravo!

Beautiful location. It sounds like you are very proud of your accomplishment and you should be! I don't wear heels very often anymore due to my knee arthritis, but when I do, I wear ones that have a wedge. They are always more comfortable for me.

Hi, I just got around to visiting you & reading this great journal entry & oohing & ahhhing the pictures of your mountain you conquered and will soon be navigating in heels. I have a feeling that you'll do just fine, especially if you can change into more comfy shoes as suggested. I'm one of the people who can't wear heels because of my knee; 1 inch is dress-up heels for me, lol. Once upon a time I climbed real mountains; those are great memories, but I'm making new ones with what I'm able to conquer now, like Zumba. OK, I'm still in the foothills, but climbing steadily ...

I wish I could invite all of you to the wedding! Thank you for all your helpful suggestions. I'll take a list of what to look for with me when I go shopping, and definitely I will be looking for two pairs instead of one!
