There is nothing fair about a diet. Or, I should say, the scale. There is no cosmic judge who counts your calories, tracks your exercise, and gives you a gold star (in the form of weight loss) on the scale exactly commensurate with how well you performed on your diet program the day before.
I think a lot of us get frustrated because we exercise, eat right, and thereby "deserve" to lose weight. And when we don't, it's like the cosmic justice system is broken, we've been cheated, and well, F-it, who cares? If I can't lose weight by doing everything right, I might as well start doing everything wrong.
I have a confession. For the past week and a half, I've been seeing my weight drop pretty fast: 204.9, 204.7, 204.3, 203.9, 203.6, 203.2, 203.0 this morning. Thats really fantastic, something to feel good about. Even better, I'm not popping back up by two to four pounds from day to day or hitting a plateau.
But here's the thing: I don't deserve it. I ate a full burger & fries at Red Robin Tuesday night. I ate fast food for lunch and chinese food for dinner on Sunday--the day was so full of snacks and bad stuff as I was traveling, I basically just gave up and didn't track that day at all. I skipped workouts Sunday (except a short hike in the redwoods, under a mile) and Tuesday. My calorie average for July so far is about 1,700 per day, whereas the past two months it has been more like 1,500.
What gives? I almost wish I were gaining a bit just to prove that there is a cosmic Diet Diety who is just and fair. It would reinforce the fact that I was doing it WRONG, making bad choices.
But instead the scale is trending down. So today I'm just making a mental note that diet karma WILL catch up to me. It might not be this week, but surely sometime in the future I'll go a week or two or three with exceptional excercise, saintly eating habits, and not lose a frickin' pound.
And I am pledging to you, friends, that I will be OK with it. Because I didn't fully deserve the loss I got this week, but I am thankful for it nevertheless.
Only one more pound to go before my milestone--when I hit 20 pounds lost!!

I love this journal entry and I think most of us here at FatSecret can relate. If there is a diet diety, it is fickle, lol. Don't say you didn't deserve it, though. You must be doing something right. Your body was probably secretly burning fat that you didn't realize because of water retention, or something. It reminds me of that song from Sound of Music which says, "Somewhere in my youth or childhood, I must have done something good." I am prepping my happy dance in anticipation of you reaching this next milestone. :)

You always have things in perspective. Good for you! It is unfair, and it sucks, but that is life. Some times things break our way, and sometimes they don't. I had a friend in grad school who used to say if he had to choose, he would pick being lucky over being smart. Some wisdom in that.
What reinforces that sense of unfairness sometimes is that there are those people who play "by the rules", and everything works the way it is supposed to. And they let you know that, with the assumption if you were truly doing everything "right", the scale would show that. Sometimes it doesn't. And that is life.

Heidi, in the whole scheme of things, it's not an occasional bad day or an occasional bad week that hurts it's the weeks on top of weeks and the years that add up. Start looking at the bigger picture and review your progress in that light. We can't expect ourselves to be "good" 100% of the time. What kind of life would that be? The fact is, overall you've been working very hard at! You DO deserve the loss!!

You deserve every beautiful thing that comes your way! Maybe the "extra" food kinda spiked your metabolism for a day - some people do it purposely - and then when you go back to "diet" mode you lose very well! ONEderland, ONEderland, WOO HOO
|
Everything in moderation, right?
Maybe this is the cosmos or greater power's way of say that you are too stressed about food or possibly not feeding your metabolism enough? Keep an eye on things, maybe your about to make a break through ;)

I hate how much the science feels like faith. It seems like there is no rhyme or reason to the scale, but ultimately, if you are doing the right things most of the time you will see the results you're hoping for. No one has to be perfect. While you hope the weight loss gods will grant you good numbers, eating well and getting fitter should be their own rewards. The number on the scale is the by-product of the good work. Congrats on your current success and I hope the trend continues.

I love reading your posts, Heidi. You have such an erudite, conversational writing style that is a pleasure to read. Seeing as you are a professional writer, that is good news! Thank you for yet another fun-to-read post. And may the Diet Deity hear you!

I would not be too ashamed to take a handout from the "Diet Diety". Where is he when 'I' need him? I've been real bad, and I don't deserve to lose any, so send some grace and mercy my way. :D Well, Heidi, I think you've been pretty disciplined overall, and even if you did average a couple hundred more calories so far for July, you're still conscious of your choices, and probably doing much better than you think. It may be the occasional spikes that are keeping your metabolism in a state of confusion, and keeping the fires stoked. Even if your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) exactly equaled the 1500 calories that you were previously consuming, it would still take 17.5 days, eating an additional 200 calories, to gain an additional pound (since 1 lb. = 3500 calories). So, I'm thinking you are still eating well below your real RDI. Anyway, congrats on the continued weight loss, in spite of your unworthiness. :)

You all are so rad. I *do* recognize that I am trying (aren't we all? I have seen some major effort by my buddies!!) but this week was such excellent weight loss, it did feel a bit unfair in context with some other weeks where I've worked much harder and lost less. Good context, DK! And Britt, you are wonderful to say so, and I look forward to your journals, too, especially beautiful pictures and candid comments!

Yep, back when I was in weight-loss mode, sometimes my losses would only come after a day that I felt guilty about - definitely something to be said about 'shocking' the body/metabolism with a rest day/a few unexpected calories..

And...I have noticed that "spike days" seem to come around on their own if you're paying attention....It's like, you can only do so much before your body (or spirit?) says "No more! Not today!" I'm beginning to wonder if it's not some very natural way of being that we've simply forgotten how to use...
