adding more fresh fruits and veggies, cut out "bad" fats and replace with "good" fats, cut way back on red meats and add more fish,as far as exercise goes, check with your doctor but walking is always a good starting point.

Monounsaturated fats and Polyunsaturated fats are good. You find these in Nuts,Avacados,Coconut Milk etc. Saturated fats are kinda bad, the body has some use for it but we consume way too much, it is the taste good fat,you know in bacon, steak, pork chops etc.,so cut way down on this type. But by far the worst of the worst, the type of fat the body has no use for is....drum roll please.....TRANSFAT!. This type of fat was cooked up in a lab it is not natural so please stay away at all costs.
The best way to figure out what you are eating is to read the nutrition information on the lable, but be forewarned the food marketers are a tricky lot,so read with a skeptical eye. But you can do it. The main thing is to try and I promise you once you get rolling there will be no stopping you.

I highly recommend getting The Pritikin Edge, or any of the older Pritikin books. It's a program that has been around since the 70's and was designed specifically to treat heart disease, as well as hypertension and type 2 diabetes. The main thrust is to eat whole foods (i.e. unrefined fruits, veggies, grains, etc.), avoid added sugar, limit animal foods (other than fish), and exercise daily. There are lots of specific recipes and guidelines in the book. I have stayed at the Pritikin Longevity Centre in Florida and seen some of the success stories first hand; it's quite amazing.
