I had a stroke in 2006 that affected my left side. It left it weaker. The stroke also affected my balance and I really have to know where I am walking because the least little thing will throw me off and cause me to fall. I cannot do any exercise that requires me to get on the floor because then I can't get up out of the floor. I need some help and suggestions as to what I can do to get in some good exercise. I am 72 years old, weigh 250 lhs., 5'1" tall and need help desparately. I have to lose 125 lbs. I am tyring to make my goals realistic and have set my goal to lose 10-12 lbs. a month. I think this is doable. What do y'all think?

I think you should seriously consider joining a gym tha thas personal trainers on staff. They are highly qualified to help you with those issues. And the gym's director of trainers will assign you the trainer who is THE MOST qualified to help someone like you. I have seen amazing results from stroke victims who have worked with personal trainers. Good luck!

Stationary reclining bike seems like a very low impact, low balance exercise. If you don't go to a gym, maybe start with something like this?

You should ask your physician to recommend a trainer with experience working with medical issues. Some trainers are well trained but only in fitness, not necessarily in exercise and therapeutic sciences. I go to a university fitness center and specifically asked for a fitness trainer with that background and got a great PhD student with other medical patients as clients. A recumbent bike is a great way to go for low impact and stability issues. I use one at home a couple of days a week. I also swim. I am a pelvic break and double knee replacement patient and doing very well following physical therapy. I have lost 61 lbs over the last two years. Surgeries interupted my progress. I now use the bike regularly. It is a programable bike so you can set it to challenge you cardio-wise and you can use it at your own pace. If you buy one, you might ask the sales people to come in and give you a training hour with it after it is delivered. I really don't recommend Target in that case. I bought mine at a fitness equipment store. Paid about $700, but have gotten my money's worth. Go slow and work your way up and you can achieve your goals.

Best of luck,

Patty

Best time for doing exercise, morning or night?
Let's face it, we are all differnt. It really doesn't make any difference, just as long as exercise. Let's all learn to listen to our own bodies, and what is right for us, not some one else.
