HELP everyone, how exactly am I going to lose weight without starving?!

Hey everyone! Ok so I'm a 16 year old girl and I have a BMI of about 25.6- which I'm sure as you all know, is just overweight. I'm quite short (5 ft 3.7" or 161.5cm- I know it's not insanely short but I feel shorter than everyone around me!)... I'm finding it really hard to stay motivated to lose weight, even though it's literally ALL I think about. My friends are all so thin and when the media shove pictures of great looking celebs in your face, it doesn't make someone like me feel great about themselves! I have very thin arms, but a horrible stomach with ugly "love handles", and short looking stumpy legs. The thing is, I do get a lot of exercise done. I joined the gym last week and spent an hour and a half there today. Most days I get at least an hour's exercise in. I'm really into sport- I play football and train with my team every Sunday. I've had pulse and blood pressure tests done and I've been told it's clear I'm active and get a lot of exercise.
Unfortunately, my eating habits aren't the best. I also have low blood sugar levels, meaning I can't go too long without some kinda food to pick me up- otherwise I feel very dizzy. I've improved a lot recently, I've cut down takeaways to once every 2 months, and only have crisps & chocolate one every 2-3 weeks, and rarely have fizzy drinks. But nowadays, every food seems bad for you, so I'm wondering, to see results from weight loss as quick as possible, what foods are best to eat? I know fruit & veg obviously, but they don't really fill me up and you can't live on just them. I really need help to get motivated and not to snack on carbs constantly. Also I got "Slender DREAM Slim & Go" tablets that aids weight loss, I'm wondering if anyone's tried them?
I need any advice on motivation, diet tips, and how not to feel CONSTANTLY down about myself! Thanks so much!

First off, get rid of the pills. You are much too young to risk damage to your body and/or metabolism.
Its fantastic that you are so active. So keep that up! Maybe you could try adding yoga and pilates to your usual work out to help tighten up your core abdominal muscles. That should help with your tummy issues.
I would recommend looking into the GI diet. Its been proven to be safe for diabetics and is aimed at keeping your blood sugar levels even. Rick Gallop's books do a good job of explaining how to keep your blood sugar levels even and how different food groups can affect it. The diet is based on eating foods that have a low glycemic index(GI) and will therefore keep you full longer. There is no calorie counting, starvation, or eliminating food groups.
I'm almost 26, but I remember being your age. I also have sisters that are 12 and 14, and the crap that the media has put in their heads is enough to give anyone nightmares. You are obviously a very smart and perceptive girl to be able to see what the media makes everyone believe. Don't forget it!

You actually might not be overweight at all. BMI is a very rough number at best, and it isn't a good metric all by itself. If you have short legs and a long torso then your body weight will naturally be a bit higher than someone with long legs and a long torso.
Also, BMI does not take the muscle-to-fat ratio into account. Arnold Schwartzenegger is obese if you only use BMI is a metric.
As for food, cut out most sugar and processed food. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, lean meats, eggs and dairy. Stay away from food that comes in packages.

pilates is king. I started pilates because of a bad back... to strengthen my core. I had taken measurements in October when I weighed 207... then from my birthday in october to chrsitmas I ate everymeal like it was the last one on earth... and guess what I gained 23 lbs. But during that whole time I did my pilates class... which develops your core. and a strong core holds your body together... even though I gained lbs... when I lost back down to 215 (still 8 lbs heavier than my low of 207) I had lost over 12 inches from my 207 measurement. and a great many inches were from my stomach.. strong abs. hold in everything and make your clothes fit better. also the BMI is wrong about 41% of the time.. in either direction.. it is a bad chart. Muscle tone is everything. You can have a low bmi and be fat because you are all flab and no muscle.. or you could be super fit like Arnold S. but your numbers would say your are obese...just like hoser said. good luck and NO PILLS.

Check out Paleo or Primal lifestyle. You will not be hungry on low carb high fat med protein consumption, and you'll lose weight!! it takes a few days for your body to get used to it and regulate your blood sugar / insulin production, but once you get over the hump, you'll feel so good!! Carbs are what causes you to be hungry and suffer withdrawals with symptoms like hypoglycemia (dizzy).

I feel so bad for young girls these days, there is this unrealistic expectation to be model thin. Only a small percentage of the population naturally look like that. Trying to diet yourself into that body shape can create the opposite. When I was your age, a long time ago, this whole super thin craze was just starting and I always thought I was so fat. Looking back at pictures of myself I looked great, all of that extra fat was in my mind. But I did all these stupid crash diets to lose weight fast and always gain everything back, with some extra. I ended up in my 50's about 150 pound overweight. You are active and cutting out processed and fast foods is good for your health in general and if you do have a few extra pounds that is the best way to get rid of them. If you have low blood sugar you should talk to your doctor or a dietician about the best diet plan for you. Just please do not take diet pills or go on any quick fix diet. They screw up your metabolism and actually cause you to gain weight in the long run. I did that and ended up overweight most of my adult life, I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

I agree with "Stella1964".
I follow along the lines of a Paleo Diet with one BAD day a week.
I'm a huge junk food junkie and it almost killed me at first to follow through.
My biggest food source is protein from meats, poultry and fish.(even for snacking) and alot of vegetables.
I ended cutting out amost all processed and starchy foods, plus stopped my simple sugar intake.
After a few days of being less energetic, I started to feel much better and less hungry all the time.
Diet pills really can do alot of damage to your body and almost all are a load of crap(they tell you what you want to hear to get your cash and get away with it)...read the fine print..."individual results may vary"
Besides I have to admit...Most of these skinny chicks in these magazines are REALLY NOT PRETTY...women should have curves, not bones sticking out everywhere...and they are photo shopped as well!

Your post caught my eye because my daughter is 14 and is going through the same feelings. I'm doing Atkins, but also helping to educate her in that a little bit as well. She is larger than most of her friends, so she is extremely self-conscious...even though she is NOT FAT. However, she could stand to use about 20 pounds so that she can find clothes that fit better. She is short - around 5'3" - and about 150 pounds. Her thighs rub together and cause painful irritation in shorts so she'd like that to stop, of course. She is a dancer and is very active. She is addicted to carbs, wants ONLY carbs, and hates most fruits. So...her doctor gave me the go-ahead to teach her (and cook for her) the low carb way of life. Her family history on her dad's side has a lot of diabetes and heart problems. Another reason the doc said changing her eating habits now (before she does become obese like me) is the best idea.
Basically I wrote all that about her so that you can see how similar your story is to hers. Do NOT take another diet pill. They are junk and can cause serious issues in a girl your age. Just change several habits and you'll see a few pounds come off, and that will feel great. I'll bet it will be very noticeable even if it's just a little bit. Don't go overboard! You sound adorable just the way you are...but it's always good to get healthier whether people are overweight or not.

This is sort of a side note, but many of the models you see are younger than you and are basically prepubescent. Enough that it was newsworthy when Vogue magazine promised to (try to) stop using models younger than 16.

I agree with all above on the diet pills, don't get started. People have lost weight and gotten healthy for years without diet pills and you can too. The hardest thing for me is to watch what I eat and not go overboard when I have sweets or fast food, but when I started recording my calories here it's helped a lot to keep me from eating so much junk. I don't do a specific diet, but I try to watch my calories and eat more fresh foods than packaged now and that's what works best for me. Make sure you are drinking enough water too, especially if you are exercising a lot.
Pilates is worth a try, it really does work your core and make it stronger. If that's not your thing, try to find some exercises specifically aimed at abs. If you go to the gym they may have some machines that you can use for abs or a stabilization ball. When I used the gym I learned a lot of moves from watching the "fit" people working out and occasionally asking those people questions about their routine.
You are so young, so I hope this journey helps you stay healthy, not just "skinny". The best thing for you is to keep eating healthy, not starving, and keeping those eating habits as you get older, and stay active. Make sure you allow yourself time, those things that you don't like about yourself won't just disappear in a week, but with time you'll see the changes.

Please go get some therapy or talk to the counselor at school! If it's all you can think about all day long, you are waaaaay to focused on your weight and shape. I remember feeling the same way you do and I struggled with eating disorders for years. Felt miserable the whole time. Losing weight isn't the key to happiness! People can be happy at any weight. Just eat in a way that gives you energy and makes you feel good physically. Are you eating past the point of fullness? Do you eat so much you feel worse? Pay attention to that kind of stuff and you will probably lose weight if you need to. Talk to your doctor about it next time you see him/her.

Whose bodies are the most beautiful to you? For me, it's not Kate Moss-- she represents skinny, but not fit and healthy. I love the bodies of dancers, swimmers, football players (Brandi Chastain comes to mind, who weighed about 155 in her epic photo). Elle MacPherson today has a killer beach body and she is all about surfing. I want you to really see the difference between skinny and healthy... Folks can be the same size on the scale, but vastly different in their look (toned vs flabby) and fitness level (strong vs weak).

When you research weight loss, healthy weight loss that is, you will see that they say 80% is diet, and the rest is exercise. But, I think that misses a huge factor. Genetics. I have struggled with my weight my whole life. I am 55 years old. Far from your age right now. But, I have two daughters, 16 and 18 years old. They seem to have inherited their dad's genetic predisposition to being slender. As someone who has struggled my whole life, with varying degrees of success, to keep my weight reasonable, I am in awe of the way they can eat what they want and stay so slender.
But, there is something else they do. They don't eat when they are not hungry. If they feel like they have eaten enough, they stop. They turn down ice cream if they are feeling satisfied. They learned to listen to their bodies to decide what and when to eat. This is an important skill. But, one that doesn't work so easily for some. With some of the research I have been doing, I believe it may have something to do with our individual insulin response. If you are someone who craves refined carbs, then your sense of hunger and satiety may be more out of whack when you eat more of those kinds of foods. I have found, a diet based on more protein and veggies, is more satisfying, and easier for me to not crave the sweets I used to love.
Bottom line; you need to accept your body for what it is. Don't compare yourself to the genetic freaks that you see in magazines. Because honestly, that is what they are. And then recognize that part of loving yourself is taking care of yourself with healthy, and delicious real food. It will be hard for the first few days or even weeks. But if you can get through that time period of eating less refined foods, you will come to appreciate how much better your body is functioning. You will fell satisfied after a meal. You will be able to resist those trigger foods more easily because you can remind yourself how much better you feel now, not eating them.
You have a chance to live a active, long, healthy vigorous life by making changes to your diet now. The more you love your body with the food you put into it, and the exercise you are already doing, the more at peace you will be. The pills will only feed your self-loathing. That is not a path I think you want.
