Hi all. I was on Atkins years ago and was very successful. Unfortunately, I did not follow all the phases and ended up gaining a lot back. So, here I am again. But, I am kinda lost on the message boards. I have ordered the new atkins book, but have not gotten it yet. Can anyone just give me the BIG changes in short form, so I can take advantage of the new atkins until my book gets here. I have been on atkins a week and lost 9 lbs! woohoo

Hello and welcome back!!

The biggest change is the amount of carbs allowed. Carbs are now counted as 'net' and on Induction one is allowed 20 net carbs. I would encourage you to download a carb counter such as fatsecret which will allow you to calculate net carbs.

The other change is a cap on protien intake... I know!! The book helps you to calculate your average daily requirement per your height.

I am back at the dreaded OWL again which like you was my downfall the last time round... It has not been easy but im advised to take it as baby steps and maintain a journal so i can monitor progress and impact of food. The weight loss is considerably slowerr this time round.. apart from the initial big drop, possibly cos one is 10 yrs older!!

Also make sure you have plenty of salt... via soya sauce, bullion broth etc to avoid 'Atkins Flu' and cramps etc.

All the best and this time round we have better tools and support so we should make it!!

And that is because long term success rate of Atkins and more in general of low carb diets are extremely poor, since they are dietary approaches very difficult to sustain long term, besides all sort of other counter-indications they have long term.
Not that other dietary approaches are so much better long term (they are, but by a small margin).
I am convinced that diets are not the solution but part of the problem. Learning to know what satisfy your body and how to manage, portions, cravings and social eating, while increasing the activity level finding activities that you love is the best way to find a permanent solution IMHO of course...
