Friday marked my last day at my job, because I'm moving out of the area. For my going away gift, my boss gave me a very tempting Dutch apple pie. Instead of just dumping the pie in the trash, I decided to keep it and test my own sense of discipline.
Over the last 2 days, I've eaten only one 1" slice per day, and am relishing my new-found sense of self control. Six months ago, I would have eaten half that pie in one sitting (easily scarfing down nearly 1000 calories).
One of the most important realizations I've made through my weight-loss journey is the fact that eating stuff that tastes really good offers diminishing returns of enjoyment and satisfaction.
That is, the first few bites of something like this apple pie are DELICIOUS. I'm enjoying eating it. But after the fourth or so bite, it's really easy to slip into a sort of robotic 'feeding' mode, so that the fifth bite is good, the sixth bite is fine, the seventh bite is whatever, and by the eight bite, you forget that you're even stuffing your face. So I just give myself small portions of stuff I like so that the enjoyment doesn't wane, and I don't binge and end up with extra calories and regret.

I follow this too. last night I had ONE ravioli and ONE tiny tiny slice of cake. It's about the taste, not mindless eating.
