Very stressful night and I turned to food instead of cigarettes. It's been almost 6 months since I smoked last and the urge to smoke is very very seldom. But today was exceptionally stressful. I turned to food meltdown instead of smoking. In the long run one bad night of eating horrid is better than one night with a cigarette. But I need feedback on healthy ways to deal with the urge to smoke/stress. Eventually I want to be able to hold off until I can workout to release the urge/stress. But I need a solution for now that is pretty instant a not negative. Any advise/ feedback is welcome.

Find ways to deal with the stress- easier said than done. But, you could go for a walk, take a shower, brush your teeth, chew some gum. Sugar free candy--- but you have to realize that you can only have a few pieces as the sugar alcohols will upset your stomach. Get a book, try to keep busy. And think about how hard it was to stop and how hard it would be to start over - also it won't taste good and you will smell Smile
I quit about 9 years ago and really don't think about it - but one day a few months ago I really wanted one - I know I wouldn't be able to do it though - the taste would be awful. I'm committed to a healthy lifestyle - which is also something you can use for motivation.

Good luck.

Oddly enough the thought of smoking now repulses me when i think hard about it. The taste the smell the feel of the smoke in my lungs. But the thought of it being a quick fix is what im craving more than the actual nicotine or act of smoking. Food is a quick fix. It's not always possible to walk, shower, read, or even brush my teeth right away. But i like your idea of having 1 or 2 hard candies around, or gum. I can easily access them and can do it just about every where. Then i can focus on that for a second while things in life cool down. Luckily not much stresses me out this bad. Thanks for the reply!

Ps. Congrats on your nine years!

heya, just came across this article:
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/05/120507210042.htm?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+sciencedaily+%28ScienceDaily%3A+Latest+Science+News%29&utm_content=Google+Feedfetcher

it's rather sciency but this paragraph might help:

"We believe that the alterations in insulin secretion could possibly be related to the increased carbohydrate cravings and weight gain experienced by many smokers who give up. However, the increase in insulin secretion and carbohydrate intake seems to be a transient effect of stopping smoking, as these changes were not seen any more after six months, even though the participants had gained more weight."

essentially your metabolism changes (from what I gather, you generate more insulin and your sells become somewhat insulin resistant or something) but these changes peter out / revert to normal after about 6 months...

so er... well keep it up and have hope, after 6 months your body will no longer excessively crave carbohydrates.
