Confused about net carb count for meat

I thought that most meat didn't have net carbs. But, yesterday I had 3 pieces of Applewood smoked bacon and it came in at 24 net carbs. Tonight I had 4 oz of Hillshire Farms Smoked Turkey Sausage and it had 3 net carbs. The nutrition breakdown had 3 carbs with 1 fiber and 1 sugar. What's up with that?

Some of the processed meat is soaked or brined in sugars. That's what probably makes up the difference in the carb count. I goofed on that same thing early on and messed up a whole days carb intake in just one meal.

See now I would have thought it's the difference between pork and turkey. Turkey is a much healthier meat.

I just didn't see how 3 carbs, 1 fiber and one sugar end up with 3 net carbs. Now part of the problem is that my carb count is way high but I don't have enough calories in for the day. I guess I'm going to eat a chunk on cheese.

Wouldn't 3 carbs, 1 fiber and one sugar (which would have been counted in the 3 carbs, I think) just be 2 carbs?

Trestes- after looking at your menu for the last few days, I see too that you haven't been getting 12-15 total carbs of your veggies on induction. Give this a shot (increasing those veggies) and see how you do. Keep plugging away at it! Somw of the labels are really confusing.

Sooki, The sugar was seperate from the fiber on the label. But, I thought it should have been 2 net carbs.
Sherillynn you are right! I was low on veggies because I wasn't sure how to handle the carb count being so high. Do I have even more carbs to get my veggies in or do I just stop eating any carbs so I didn't push the count up even more.

According to the website, that turkey sausage has "less than 1g of fiber" which might lead to some confusion calculating net carbs. Whenever something says that, I usually treat it was 0g just to be safe. .01g is less than 1!

Trestes- Try to get all of your veggies in on the 12-15 carb count and if I go a little over on the other carbs I don't sweat it too much as long as I am not gorging on things like bread and sweets. It is helpful to enter what you are going to have BEFORE you eat it and that way if it is way off you are able to adjust accordingly before you ingest it.

What usually helped me was reading labels before doing any buying or cooking. Whatever the carbs are, subtract the fiber and you have your net count. Also I agree with putting the food in the diet tracker prior to eating it, to make sure you stay under your carb goal.
