So, I've tried the burgers, the sausage and the bacon. I like them more than beef. They are pretty low cal, so what's the deal? They are costly which is one drawback, but anything else I need to know?

Some turkey products are high in sodium....be careful. make sure you read the back of that box.

Veggie burgers have less calories, less saturated fat, and are all around better for your health...not to mention they taste much better! There are so many options out there, but I'd recommend Boca or Dr. Praeger's. Another drawback of turkey burgers would be the horrid ways turkeys are being farmed and killed on a massive scale (300mil/year). If you are ever interested in opening your eyes to even more "drawbacks", check out this site http://www.goveg.com/factoryFarming_turkeys_farms.asp.

I second the veggie burger recommendation! Delicious and (usually) cruelty-free.

I love Turkey products. An excellent substitute for beef or pork. I've even got my husband to like it more!

I second the sodium note above-read the labels Smile

You have to make sure it is lean turkey..white meat only. Many turkey products are made with the dark, light and skin. Be a label reader!

Before I stopped eating meat (for the reasons VeganLinz mentioned) I was cooking with a lot of turkey. I found I liked the taste quite a bit! I made turkey marinara (the recipe is in my cook book) turkey chili, and turkey burgers.

In all reality, there's no health reason to choose turkey over lean ground beef though. So if the price is a concern and you can get lean ground beef cheaper, don't feel like you shouldn't eat it. Variety. Try to eat a variety of foods so you get the benefits of all of them, even the ones nutritionists don't know about yet.

(I love Dr Praeger's veggie burgers- I love that you can see all the veggies and there are no fillers. They are the only ones I've found that fit my "don't eat it if you don't know what it is" rule.)

If you buy extra lean ground turkey breast (the most expensive) it may be slightly leaner. But I also used to buy 97% lean ground beef, which is actually LEANER than most commercially packaged ground turkey. Never assume, read the label. Every manufacturer will be different.

Thanks K8yk, I do love these turkey products. I go shopping again on Tuesday (hopefully without my little girl) and intend to spend some time on labels.

VeganLinz, thanks for the insulting link. I did go to Peta site and didn't find anything about the turkeys. Oh well.

Hey tifany, I don't think VeganLinz was trying to insult you, but I can see how you might take it that way. She's right you know, there's some awful stuff that goes on in the meat industry. This is a hard thing for people to hear if they are not prepared to hear it. But it's kind of undeniable that the meat industry is very harmful to people, animals, and the environment, not to mention your health.

I'm not saying you have to give up meat to be healthy, but for me, the only way I could eat it was by turning a blind eye. Once I really thought about what was going on, I had to stop eating it.

I'm a vegetarian, as you might know, and it's because of this. I actually think people are probably meant to eat meat and it is much easier to get complete nutrition if you do. But I for one just can't look past the horror that is industrialized meat.

Don't look at this link if you don't want to be really grossed out. I'm not saying everyone should give up meat. Just personally, I can't live with myself knowing I'm contributing to this kind of thing. Sad

I spoke with my physician and they said there is NO health reason to give up meat. That part is about making healthy overall food choices.
I personally love the idea of "don't eat it if you don't know what's in it" idea.

As to your morals regarding the meat industry that is up to
you...Personally I kinda know what goes on but have not given up meat because I believe it is important part of the human diet (me personally not saying anything is wrong if you choose not too- I don't want to start an argument.

I agree with your physician, there is no health reason to give up meat. Unless you get a bad piece that's infected with e coli or salmonella, but even that can usually be eliminated by thorough cooking. It's all moral for me, and my own revulsion. I just can't stand the thought of eating a chicken that's never seen the light of day and has been wading in it's own s##t for its entire life. It just grosses me out. I WILL eat meat if I know where it came from- like if my aunt shoots a deer, I will definitely eat the venison she serves. Or the pig farmer at my farmer's market who can tell me all about how his pigs are raised, fed, and slaughtered.

No judgment on anyone else though - it's all a personal choice. I believe in knowledge. If you know what goes on, and it is still palatable to you, more power too you! I'm just weak-stomached about things like that myself Smile

Don't click if easily offended. Some might find it funny though.

Politically incorrect and mildly vulgar

rjenkins27 - LOL!! That was funny! No offense to any and all vegetarians. Seriously. Some of my favorite people on Earth happen to be vegetarians. Me? I'll stick to meat. : )
