I just got a treadmill. And I'm super excited about using it. But I am getting blisters on the backs of my ankles. And they hurt to the point that I had to stop today.

I'm wearing socks and impact/arch support insoles in $80 Filas running shoes.

What can I do??

As a run-aholic, this is kind of my specialty. Here are some things to think about.

1) Cotton is rotten.
When you can avoid cotton, do so. It absorbs too much moisture, which can cause blisters. Use socks made from wicking materials that will keep your feet drier.

2) Who told you to get fancy insoles?
If a podiatrist gave you the OK, then use them. Otherwise, you may be doing more damage than good. Think about construction. What happens to an arch when you support it from the bottom? It crumbles.

3) What kind of running shoes?
Running shoes are usually grouped into stability, neutral, and motion control types. Most people have no idea what kind they need, and most stores are even more clueless. If you are lucky enough to have a running store (not a sports store, but a dedicated running store) near you, then they can watch you walk and tell you what kind of shoes you need. Otherwise, you can do some online research to make an educated guess as to which type best suits you. If you are wearing the wrong type of shoe it could cause an abnormal stride/landing that could lead to blistering. If by "the back of your ankles" you mean on your Achilles tendon, then your shoes may be too high (are you wearing high tops?), oddly constructed, or possibly too tight.

PS,
I just started reading the Sword of Truth books (just started #2, and I love the quote in your signature.)

"You are now watchin' the throne. Don't let me into my zone. Don't let me into my zone.
I'm definitely in my zone."
