I do not know, but a nutritionist told me that diet sodas are actually better for you than regular ones

Nutritionists have different opinions on different topics.
Relying on diet soda for weight loss is a strategy that is setting yourself up for failure.

Well, i would say that anything in excess can be real bad for our health. So drinking diet coke in a moderate amount won't do any harm. You need to also exercise at least thrice a week. Keep a watch on your diet plan as well.

Some say the artificial sweeteners in diet sodas stimulate appetite.

And that might be true for some people. I know it isn't for me. But diet (and I mean that in the "stuff you eat" not the "lose weight" sense of the word) is a very very complex subject. And
unique
to every person. What's true for one person isn't true for others.
It's taken me 36 years to get to the point I am at now. I wish I had had a few of the epiphanies, I've had recently a decade earlier... But hey it wasn't to be.

There are a lot of shaky claims that aspartame can cause cancer and so on, but so far the biggest problem with Diet Soda is the Sodium content, last year a study that lasted
nine years
concluded that people who drink one or more Diet Soda can increase the risk of stroke and cardiovascular problems, specifically, because of the high Sodium content.
The same study concluded that because all the "diet" merchandise out there, quite a few americans wrongfully believe that their diets that include such drinks are healthy.
Take some time to read it and then you can take your own conclusions, frankly I still drink sodas, because I have a hard time kicking bad eating and drinking habits, however compared to what I used to take, it's much better now, and I feel better.

I started my weight loss journey seriously on oct 18 of 2012, and so far:

I'd avoid carbonated beverages. Better to drink water, almond milk, fruit juice (if you're not diabetic), tea. Go off anything carbonated for 3 months (basically, 1 season) and see what happens. I dropped 20 pounds in 3 months just swearing off of all carbonated drinks.

A study and an article that shows a correlation rather than a causation...
Even the article mere says that it raises a question, not that it answers one.

Artificial sweeteners make me hungry. I use to add zero cal packets to my water. Then I noticed how hungry I felt. I stopped the sweeteners and the hungry pangs went away! I like Agave Nectar in my coffee. Only one tablespoon- the label says 16g sugar, however... it does not spike blood sugars like honey.

Well, riocaz, you can base your own choices on your gut instincts, research conducted by artificial sweetener manufacturers, or television ads if you prefer. Despite increases in artificial sweetener sales, obesity is increasing. You'd have difficulty justifying a recommendation to eat more of the stuff.

I too am a huge coke zero drinker, I drink about 2 liters a day and not much else. I am also diabetic. I am no doctor but... The coke has not effected my sugar/insulin, I believe it is true that fake sugar makes you crave the real stuff or carby food. I don't believe it will affect weight gain/loss except maybe a pound or 2 water retention.
I am a coke zero addict I have try the 1 to 1 coke/water with no real effects. Before when I was drinking Pepsi regular I quit for a month with no effects, except a big headache for the first couple of days. Is it good for you NO should we be drinking water YES, but we need to pick our own battles daily and decide what is the best route for our success. good luck.

Clearly you didn't bother to read what I wrote or the article you linked too...
I can say specifically that I have never noticed any hunger pangs or cravings after drinking diet soda... quite the opposite in fact! That's not a gut feeling that is evidence personal to me based on decades of personal observation! However as evidenced in this thread others have had different experiences. As I stated explicitly earlier in the thread everyone's diet and experiences will differ! Diets are unique to us all!
The study and the article state there is a correlation. Nowhere does either suggest there is a any other link just that further study is justified given the correlation... Of course there is a rather obvious point that people who are already overweight have a tendency to buy 'diet' products which have been artificiality sweetened... They are, after all, the target market!
To quote the article:
Quote:
The findings of the study raise the question whether artificially sweetener use might be fueling-rather than fighting-the escalating obesity epidemic.
It raises a question... it doesn't answer one.

Just my own personal experience...After years of drinking tons of diet coke my knees and shoulder became very painful. After stopping drinking diet coke the pain disappeared. Then, stupidly, three weeks ago I again allowed myself to get readdicted to diet coke. My weight loss stalled and my knee joints became very painful again. I also was experiencing muscle pain. I stopped drinking it again yesterday and the pain in my joints and muscles are gone and my anxiety level has decreased. Time will tell about my weight loss plateau. This is not just related to the caffeine, because I've been drinking more coffee to counteract the caffeine withdrawals. From my experience, I'm convinced that diet coke is very addicting and damaging to my body. I had heard this before and was in denial about its negative effects because I enjoyed it too much. But it's time for me to face reality that it is very detrimental to my health.

TLH0330, I like that idea of dropping all carbonated drinks. I am an addict of diet coke, my mother drank caffine free diet coke for many years. She would go through a 12 pack or more a day to herself. Unfortunately we lost her 3 years ago to cancer. So I grew up with soda constantly in the home. I think I am going to try this new lifestyle of ridding myself of the one thing that I know I can do without. Thank you.

I too love love diet coke, and I it most certainly has a impact on your diet, our body needs the water to flush all the toxins, I just have not convinced myself to rid them all togather, my problems is as long as I am drinking diet cokes I won't drink enough water.

Aspartame is deadly stuff, and actually causes you to gain weight. I don't use any artificial sweeteners. When I tried Atkins once, the artificial sweeteners made me so sick, I had to quit taking them. It's Stevia for me all the time now.

I don't drink cola even if it's a diet cola. The contents of it will hurt your health when you age.

Best time for doing exercise, morning or night?
Let's face it, we are all differnt. It really doesn't make any difference, just as long as exercise. Let's all learn to listen to our own bodies, and what is right for us, not some one else.
