Hi, I'm following recipes from the hairy dieters book too. Everything I have eaten this week and been very tasty. The whole family (me, hubby and 3 year old little one) have enjoyed following it so far. Both my husband and I are after losing weight (quite a bit actually
) and I like the meals as they are just good healthy food for my son. We started a week ago and weigh day was yesterday, hubby lost 1 stone and 1/4 of a pound (very important he tells me as it takes him the next stone down
) and I have lost 6lbs so a good start. I am making the mince and potato pies for tea tonight. What other recipes have you tried from the book? Deb x

Some of the recipes have looked delicious, and they are right that the key is keeping the quantity and the flavour up but lowering the overall calories.
And the difference in them from the first show to the 4th was amazing. Shame it was only 4 episodes though.
One thing that wasn't on the show but that I would highly recommend if you like rice is trying the "cauliflower rice". I deeply loathe cauliflower unless it's flavour is heavily masked with curry or cheese. But I was convinced to try it a couple of weeks back and I am still surprised that it works so well and doesn't actually taste like cauliflower.
Grate or process florets of cauliflower until they are between the size of rice and couscous (takes about 9 pulses). Season and microwave on for 4-5 minutes until it's hot but not completely cooked through (otherwise it goes mushy).
It comes out tasting kind of starchy and pretty bland. And either on it's own or used in a ratio to bulk out some actual rice it allows you to have a much bigger portion without losing the texture. (and of course is one of your 5 a day which rice isn't.

I might have to give the cauliflower rice ago. Thanks for the idea.

It surprised me and even if you don't think it's great on it's own, try it mixed with real rice, as I know others have found it's more successful for them 1:1 or 2:1 with rice to bulk it out. The main risk is overcooking it, once it gets fully soft it loses the textural similarity and the cauliflower flavour gets stronger.

I think i would have to be a combiner of cauliflower and rice (still love my rice and pasta) Haven't got any meals planned to use rice this week but I may have to add one in next week

I make mashed cauliflower and add cheese and spices to it. It is a good replacement for potatoes even though it's not the same consistancy. That's what i've got for lunch today!

weigh in
Good luck! I weigh in every day which has to stop. It is too easy to get caught up in the excitement of seeing the scale drop so much in a week-that is because of water weight I am sure.

Need suggestions on healthy/low-calorie foods.
You can use shakes for a few days. I have used the Atkins shakes and they are very good tasting. Soups are good though as stated above you may have to puree them. You could puree or blend cottage cheese ...
