Hello - What is the signifcance of drinking substantial amounts of water? I have heard 8 glasses per day. Is that 8 oz per glass or 16 oz? I have also heard 1/2 oz of water per pound of wieght, i.e. 120 lbs=60 oz (2 - 32 oz bottles of water) or 270 lbs=135 oz. (4 - 32 oz bottles) Does it make sense to reduce your water intake as you loose weight? Does the water assist with the loss?

Eight 8oz glasses is the general recommendation.

There are some people who believe you need to push huge amounts of water when you're losing weight... that appears not to be true. Drinking water before or during a meal can help you feel fuller, but that's the only real weight loss effect. Beyond that, you really only need to drink enough to stay well hydrated.

To me, staying hydrated makes me feel a lot better in general. My skin looks better, my digestion runs more smoothly, & my weight doesn't fluctuate as much. No, it doesn't make sense to reduce your water intake as you lose weight, because your tissues will be more likely to retain fluid due to dehydration. Drink water because it's healthy to do so. A bonus is that it helps control your appetite. I find that the more water I drink, the less I crave sweet drinks like soda or juice.

The specific amount that is "ideal" for each person varies, 64 oz is a good place to start, & you may have to work up to it. But you'll find a level that's comfortable for you.

You can tell if you're drinking enough water by the color of your urine. It should be pale yellow, and not much darker than that even first thing in the morning.

If you feel thirsty, you're already dehydrated, so drinking water regularly throughout the day helps avoid dehydration. Why is dehydration bad? Because the body will retain water when it senses dehydration, and any woman can tell you how bad that is. I do believe water also helps your skin stay soft and supple, especially if you live in a dry climate. I know a woman here who hates water, and although she's in pretty good shape for her age, her face is a prune. I'm just sayin.......
