Some of you may know that Consumer Reports, in its May issue titled "Best & Worst Supermarkets," ranked best and worst supermarkets in the nation. I live in So-California, and I usually go to Ralph's to do my weekly grocery shopping. Now I'm trying to decide between Whole Foods Market and Trader Joe's. What's your favorite supermarket? Let's all eat healthy without wilting our savings and our values!

I love Publix. I was there tonight picking up my free antibiotics (paid for the ear drops script) and did some shopping for dinner. Their greenwise section is a little like whole foods but the prices don't kill me (quite as much). I don't usually buy my meats there because of the prices but otherwise that's my store. (Sweetbay for meats because of the mark down prices they always seem to have) I found that when I tried wal-mart grocery store my total was higher than Publix. I just shop the sales well.

We have Price Copper, Hy Vee, Wal Mart and Target here and also a couple of smaller chains Thriftway, Apple Market, and Sun Fresh and Aldis There is a Whole Foods and a Trader Joes in the metro area however they are a long ways away so with the gas prices not cost effective. I mostly go to smaller ethnic shops, farmer's markets, my little localy owned Thriftway at the corner and Aldis. I buy very little at the larger markets -- this works better for my budget. I am going to also start shopping at restaurant depot as I do have the appropriate business credentials.

I love shopping at Whole Foods. Lots of tempting organic produce, and their meat and fish departments are well stocked.

For So Cal, I just find Whole Foods too expensive but I do go there for Organic Pastures butter and unrefined organic coconut oil. I think Vajarta generally has the best produce prices (although it is not organic) and the best meat specials. Can also find good meat specials at Smart and Final. I get most of my staples, canned goods, etc., at Ralphs. Jons usually has a good olive oil on sale. I don't use Mayo much but when I do, trader Joes mayo is great.

Oh, another Southern Californian! I wonder if we've run into each other in the aisles while shopping.
Just a note to other local residents... Whole Foods is the only store I can find Arctic Zero (ice cream alternative with balanced protein coming in at 37 calories a serving).
And food for thought when weighing out choices on where to shop (pun intended). Consider what you save on junk food (chips, desserts, fatty snacks, pizzas, fast food, etc.) and portion control. For us the savings have significantly reduced our monthly grocery bill. Even shopping at Whole Foods, there's change left in our pockets.

Berkeley Bowl, but there are only two of them and they're in Berkeley California. Imagine a store that makes Whole Foods look like a corner market when it comes to produce and high-quality meats.

That's good to know an ice cream w/so little calories! What about carbs? Cuz I'm doing Atkins low carb diet now. Might go and check it out this week.

It's listed on FS. Click on Foods and do a search for "Arctic Zero." It has 37 calories, 0 fat, 7g carbs, 2g fiber, 6g sugar, and 3.4g protein. Chocolate and chocolate peanut butter are my favorites, but I'm not overly fond of the vanilla maple.

Trader Joe's, hands down. No contest.
A bad moment does not have to be a bad day, bad week, or a sign that you can't do this. It is a moment. Just that. Pause and go back to the person who really wants to be healthier and happier.

AReally, yduj57? I find that Trader Joe's has some of the worst produce I've ever encountered-- it seems to be all about the packaged and prepared food.

I really only have 2 supermarkets to choose from since there really aren't that many Asian supermarket chains
. 99 Ranch and Lion Supermarket....which is a one-sided battle.
My #1 supermarket is 99 Ranch (excluding smaller chains that seem like mom & pop supermarkets). It's as large as any Safeway, contains a bakery, a hot deli, a fresh poultry and seafood section (which English/U.S. Supermarkets direly need, esp. the latter), Asian vegetables, cookware, and a large array of soy/tofu products.

I love Vons and Pavillions. If you sign up for their Just for U program, you can load specials directly to your Value card. I live in Ventura county north of Malibu.
