If I consume less calories then I burn. Is that a good thing? I'm new here and just trying to figure things out.

If your goal is to lose body fat, it's a very good thing. In fact, you need a calorie deficit in order to reduce your body mass.

That's not the end of the story by a long shot, but it's where you must start.
