While I was ranting about the fat acceptance movement in another thread, FatSecret showed me a banner ad for their new propaganda website. My favorite bit of disinformation is this:

Quote:
FACT:

There has been a 23% reduction in the average calories per serving from beverages sold between 1998 and 2010.

That is probably true, strictly speaking. However, the number of servings of soda that people consume has skyrocketed. Here are the current McDonalds soda sizes:

12oz: Child
16oz: Small
21oz: Medium
32oz: Large

That's great, but a serving of soda is 8 ounces. A child-sized drink is 1.5 servings. A small is two servings, and a large is four servings of soda. The child-size drink has 29 grams of sugar, and the large has 86. Too many people think that a large soda is a perfectly reasonable serving size these days. (Insert some handwaving about part of it being ice, but still...)

Irrespective of the servings, I find that these sodas are too addictive. Personally, if I drink a bit of it, I tend to want more. Not a happy thing.

The only thing that helps is when I input those useless calories here and find that I could have had a really good fried egg with toast within those calories. Grrr!

Or a really good bar of dark chocolate. At least the chocolate has some antioxidants in it!

Hoser, I have a feeling the rise of the many diet and semi-diet/lower sugar sodas contribute to that 23% statistic, which really are no better for you. (Diet Coke, Coke Zero, C2, Diet Pepsi, Pepsi Next, Pepsi Max, Diet Dr. Pepper, Dr. Pepper 10, etc.) And it says "beverages" so that probably includes "health drinks/sport drinks" such as Gatorade, G2, Vitamin Water, Vitamin Water Zero, Sobe Lifewater, etc. etc.

If I'm going to drink my calories, I prefer to drink them in the adult beverage format. Wine has antioxidants, flavanoids and is good for the heart. Beer has B vitamins, is a good source of silicon and contains other minerals, and contains flavanoids as well. Cheers!
