I work a desk job meaning I'm on my butt for 8 hours a day. I've been tapping my feet under my desk off and on all day to have some movement when I can't get up and walk around. I'm wondering if this is considered exercise and how would I put this into my caloriecounter?

This is not exercise. Stop trying to game the exercise calculator, you're only cheating yourself.

I did research on my question and found out something interesting. I found out what I'm doing IS actually burning calories. Not as many as say a 30 minute run but it is burning some. If you don't have anything nice to say or have positive constructive critism(can there be such a thing?) don't bother posting. I'm not cheating myself from what I've learned. I'm not gaming anything. In the future don't be a jerk, don't reply, just move on....
This is what I found out.
Fidgeting (tapping my feet, what I was asking about.) really helps to burn calories because you're moving muscles all day long. In fact, calories burned while fidgeting are classified as Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT). The number of calories you burn depends on the speed and duration of your foot tapping, as well as on your weight and age, but I’d venture to guess that fidgeting burns about 120 calories an hour.

You are right about the fidgeting thing. I read an article some time ago labeled, "Habbits of a Skinny Person" or something like that. Fidgeting was one of the habbits. I am one that can not stay still so I do it regardless
I don't put in into my exercise calander b/c I think it already acounted for. If I'm not mistaken fidgeting is something that is accounted for in your BMR or RMR (Basal and Resting Metabolic Rates). That is basically the calories you burn daily without exercise. If you were to try to add it in you would be doubling up on calories burned and therefore doing yourself a disservice b/c your calculations would be wrong. You would have a false positive on the calories burned.
Hope that made sense. Send me a message if this didn't make sense b/c I think I'm confusing myself in my explanation. lol.

That's make sense, when you say it like that. I wasn't aware it was probably counted for in the BMR/RMR, now I know. That's all I needed to hear.

Don't get discouraged. This road less traveled that we take can seem overwhelming but there are many of us out there that want to encourage you to continue to lose like you have shown you can do. Trust me we have all had those rough days but we show our fight when you keep on keeping on. Keep it up girl

I heard an interview with someone (insert handwaving about who) who had interesting things to say about desk jobs. One of the things they said was that standing up for two minutes out of every 20 will undo most of the negative effects of sitting. Walking around is better, but just plain standing activates the large muscles of the lower body.
The person suggested that you get into the habit of standing up when you make phone calls, talk to people, etc. It made sense.
The interview was on Fresh Air.

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm a desk for 9 hours a day actually as I typically end up working through lunch. I'm actually thinking of getting an under desk peddler to get some exercise into my work day. Has anyone ever used these at a desk and know if it helps at all or if you're just banging your knees into your desk all day? Maybe I'll submit a seperate thread about this?!

I heard the interview with Gretchen Reynolds too and thought it made a lot of sense - I work for myself, so no one is making me spend hours at the computer, but it is amazing how difficult it is to remember to stand up for 2 minutes out of every hour, never mind 2 minutes out of every 10

I have eyestrain reduction software on my computer called FadeTop (for Windows). Every 15 minutes it fades the screen for 20 seconds to remind me to look away and rest my eyes. It would be easy enough to use something like that as a reminder to stand up.

You may wanna try some isometric excercises.. in a nutshell, contracting indivdual muscle groups while the body stays static.(think bicep curls, leg extensions, even kegels are isometric excercises) It's a great way to gradually tone muscle.. and the more muscle you build the more calories your body burns naturally. Here's a link for some examples.

I have now gotten so far that I literally stand up my entire work day, and it feels weird to sit down and do desk work. I feel so many benefits from standing up - I think better, I'm more comfortable, my back hurts less.
Unless I am with a client, I'll be standing up. Most clients find it weird to stand up for a meeting.
