hey there! I am also doing a low cal diet and i have been doing it since January. I found that after a week or two the cravings went away and the binging wasn't a problem anymore. Just stick to your guns and you should be fine =]
Now that Im home for the summer its a different story. No one in my family wants to eat healthy and it makes it difficult to find low cal healthy foods in this house. I am getting back on track so if you'd like we can be buddies and we can help each other out =]

I've been counting calories for 18 months, and I am at my goal - stepping into next phase. I have tons of experience, and you're more than welcome to add me as a buddy if you like.
I will already now that you don't go for a "very low cal diet", but simply a "low cal diet". It's easier to accomplish, healthier and will most likely give you better results. Enjoy the weigh loss journey, don't make it a battle.

thanks for your replies lol i'm afraid its either very low cal or eating my weight in anything i can find, i cant do the inbetween thing (tried for 10 yr) if its not a battle i get distracted its the only way i can focus on my goals. i know not a healthy way to think about food (works for everything else). and i eat plenty of veg ect but its the kids and hubbies sweets and junk that call to me
need all the support i can get because i can watch him consume 6000 cals a day and lose weight constantly where i sniff it and bam!!!!

One thing I have learned in the short time I've been on my healthy lifestyle is you have to really want it. That seems simple but it's not. In my case I would only have a little desire to lose weight, the first slip I made I would gladly hop off the weight-loss wagon saying it was too hard and I couldn't do it. You have to really want to lose weight, I mean want it bad. I want to lose weight bad. Now that I have such a desire to lose weight I'm better able to fight off junk. Everytime I start to eat something that's not to good for me or start to mindlessly eat I think "wait, is this really worth it? How much exercise will I have to do to burn this off?" That's usually enough to make me put down whatever I was going to eat. If that doesn't work I think of my boys. I want to be healthy for them. Eating junk means it will take me a lot longer to get where I want to be and it's just not worth it.

Also I agree with Chels21. The first week or two was absolute torture cravings-wise. After around two weeks things got easier and I didn't have bad cravings anymore. Honestly I think it was all in my head. My fat behind was telling me to eat it not my stomach....

Hi I wanted to comment on the cravings thing. I have noticed that my biggest calorie intake is in the evening after work, Im just a bottomless pit and wanted something to cuve that appitite. Then I herd Jillian Michaels (on her podcast check it out in iTunes) talk about psyllium husks which are a seed shell (think the thin papery covering on a peanut (not the actually shell)). The shells are ground into a powder that comes either loose or in a capsule.
The benefit of the Psyllium husk is that its really high in fiber and when combine with water it swells up ant turns into a jell causing a feeling of fullness. This is beneficial to keeping you feeling fuller longer and I must say it defiantly works. The key is to drink a lot of water (read the instructions very carefully).
The capsules are working great, it completely cut out the after dinner snacking for me. The only catch is it adds water bulk until it passes so its keeping me artificially up a pound or so because Im taking it regularly.
Dont take my word for it check out some info yourself:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psyllium_seed_husks
I'm using these because each capsules provides a full gram of dietary fiber plus added acidophilus to enhance intestinal flora and to assist in body detoxification. No added sugar or flavors.

It's not just about will power. There are some factors that contribute to craving even ruining a days work by eating too much end of day.
I read somewhere that you should eat 60-65% of your caloric intake by 2:00 pm. When my calories are low early in the day, I crave in the evening.
Another factor is actual intake choice. Check out this site:
www.beyonddiet.com
Watch the video about processed foods, and sugared or artificially flavored drinks.

This video is very long, but super insightful. I take in most of my carbs as freshly juiced (JackLaLanne juicer). It helps keep my energy up. I really don't have an energy problem, and my intake is VERY low.
Good Luck,

Patience - try to eliminate the processed foods for two weeks. Your cravings will stop (good luck with the emotional eating.) It is the best kept secret - that and water. You will not crave them AS MUCH - trust me you will have more good days than bad! Don't beat yourself up about giving in - it happens to most of us. PS about the family treats - try to get them things (or brands) you do not like. Also related to last post - you must eat even when you are not hungry. You will do more harm than good if you don't fuel your body during the day. C affine is only a temporary fix.

Work until 10PM, I have noticed when I get home I am sooo hungry at times I do get carried away, sometimes not. Maybe eating something around 8PM would help.

I know it is hard but, it is a good idea to have a time that the kitchen 'closes'. If my husband wants anything after 8 pm (for me) he has to get it himself. I don't go in the kitchen after 8. It took me about six months to ween off the junk food. I just stopped buying it; now any snacks in the house (not avoidable with a hubby and kids under 7) are fruits, vegetables, peanut butter, and nutella.

I have found that the habit of eating when watching tv does form a habit so that first couple of weeks it is also breaking the habit. Watching tv = eating something. I keep sugar free jello in the fridge and I eat some every night. It satisfies that craving and that nasty habit that I formed.

I'll second what jamie30024 says above. Low sugar jelly is helping me in the evenings to get my 'sugar' fix.

If Sugar free jelly on it's own isn't enough then with a bit of fresh fruit chopped in it. I bought little baby food pots (140ml) and filled them at work.
1 pint of jelly and 250g of seedless little red grapes made 8 pots at about 26kcal per pot.
