I just have to do it publicly, whether anyone cares or not. LOL!!
Anyway, When I'm all enthusiastic about watching my dietary intake and exercising, I tend to get, and stay, on Fatsectet....until I fall off the wagon into the pasta dish. Then I drop Fatsecret like a hot potato cuz I don't wanna look in the proverbial mirror.
Further, with me, exercise and diet seem to go hand in hand. If I'm motivated to do one, I usually do the other. But since I work long hours (minimum of 12 a day and usually closer to 14-15), if my day ends up being anything over 12 hours long, I don't work out...period. Therefore since they go hand in hand to me, I don't watch my diet in such cases either.
Anyway, I'm currently working long hours this hitch but I'm going to get back on Fatsecret and stay here regardless of what I eat. This should be interesting since it's outside of my usual "box". But I'm determined to isolate these two things (diet and exercise) to show myself that just cuz it's difficult to do one, it won't mean Í can't do the other. Wish me luck.
Cheers!

Hi Wendell,
I am like you, and have come and gone here on FS more than a few times. This is my longest "stint". Once it "catches" it becomes a whole lot easier, and more routine to come here. Then you might start drama with people and get pissed off about forum posts, but I digress
I had a bit of an eye opener in regards to diet and exercise this time. I had a full rupture of my Achilles last Thanksgiving (November if your a brit). I had surgery Dec 31. So I was laid up on a sofa for about 4 weeks, and in a boot/cast even longer....
My weight loss continued just fine! Actually some of my best weight loss was on that sofa! Maybe some was muscle, but my appetite was seriously lower. Not moving around lowers your appetite.
Not sure what kind of work you do, but if its physical or even walking even, your burning quite a bit of calories there. It also probably makes it hard to cut back on foods if you work hard. So I get you there.
Oh, and my latest mantra "Its 80% what you eat, 20% what you do..."
Good luck!

Thanks for your encouragement everyone. Today sucked from a calorie stand point but it was a success from a motivational standpoint. I guzzled down 3119 calories, but at least I logged everything. And that's motivation for me to PLAN tomorrow rather than just log what I ate at the end of the day like I did today. Hopefully when it's all said and done, I'll have the same luck JP did. In the mean time, I'll check out IIFYM. I've never heard of it till now. Thanks again!
Cheers!

Heh, Wendell. It takes a lot of courage to log EVERYTHING you put in your mouth. That is my policy, too, and it makes a big difference. You'll get a handle on this. I know you will.
Take care!

Good Luck! Tomorrow is always a new day and a new opportunity to do better. Tracking all your calories will be very helpful and an eye-opener!
While eating right and exercising is optimal for weight loss - they don't always have to go hand in hand. I have lost 35 pounds by just counting calories and no exercise - other than the odd walk. However, I knew it was a matter of time before I plateaued and really needed to start working out. So I am now 2 weeks into daily exercising.
But we face daily challenges and there will be days when you won't be able to exercise...don't throw in the towel and eat everything in sight...stay on track and if you can increase your exercise the next day - great. Whether it is avoiding extra calorie - by putting that cookie back in the box - or doing 10 minutes of exercise, or 10 minutes extra...it all helps.
I really think planning ahead will help a lot too. If you know tomorrow is a no exercise day - be more careful with calories. Pack your lunch; keep a stash of healthy snacks nearby; adjust tomorrow plans based on todays successes or lack of.
It's not easy - but being in control will make you successful!
A year from now you will look back and wish you had started today.
