Late last year I started having "missing" heart beats. I found out I have PVC (premature ventricular contractions.) It is where my heart misfires causing an extra beat and the missing beat is my heart trying to get back into its normal rhythm. Recently I started running again. Sunday my heart started acting up and it is still doing it today. My doctor told me that I’m okay and am able to exercise as long as I’m not passing out(joking)but I want to know if anyone else has this problem and what do they do when it happens? It is very annoying and sometimes makes it hard to catch my breath. Any fee back is appreciated

I know I was having missing hearbeats. I had physicals every year, and then all of a sudden about 5 years ago, every doctor visit resulted in "missing/skipping heartbeats". About 3 or 4 months after I started running and lost weight, everything went to normal. I don't know why, but I'm not knocking it.

Funny thing is that I didn't have this before I lost weight or started exercising. It all happened after.

Sounds like a different issue from mine.

I have PVC's too, and learned from a friend who's dealt with it for years that if you take a very deep breath and hold it for a few seconds when you feel them starting, it somehow resets things and stops the palpitations. It really does work. At my heaviest I had several sets that brought me close to blackout, but once I started this technique, I was able to control them before they got that far. And of course, weight loss helps a ton - I've gone from having them every day, to only noticing it once in a while, and they're not nearly as stron and scary. Another thing to check is any meds you may be on. Some medications make them worse. Cutting down on caffeine is a biggie too - although I admit I still have my NECESSARY cup of coffee every morning!! Good luck - I know these can be scary, but from what I can tell after lots of research, they are extremely rarely dangerous.

I have these a lot, and they were not a factor of weight. I also have a high heartrate (was getting to 170 bpm when I woke up in the a.m.), I don't know if you have that too. I was diagnosed with them about 2 years ago and am on a blood pressure med to help regulate the PVC's and the rapid heartbeat. I also kicked most caffeine and only have a small amount a day in tea, and am going to switch that to decaf too. Once I started taking the blood pressure pills and got rid of most of my caffeine it helped, I still have them, but not as bad. Also, I notice that when I exercise it seems like I do better. You'll be okay, now that you know what's going on things will get better. I was scared to exercise before the doc told me what was going on, but she says that exercise won't hurt and these are just going to be a fact of life for me, so I'm getting used to them. I hope you can get used to them too or they get better. Good luck!!

I used to have pvc's all the time, when i quit the caffeine it pretty much stopped. everyone once in awhile i will drink a coke and it comes back for a minute. i think its actually a pretty common thing though.

ECO Atkins for a skinny vegetarian with a belly
This would be a good question for the nutritionist over on the atkins.com boards. Colette Heimowitz is her name. Post your question with her name in the title and she will respond.

Even though fat doesn't count in Atkins, it can cause you to gain or not lose weight if you consume too much. Be careful of over eating this nutrient. ie: cream, cream cheese.
