Hi, all, does anyone know of any exercises for someone who has arthritis in the knees and lower back? I know walking, but is there anything else that is low impact?

I know from my physical therapy that exercising in a pool is much easier on your joints. Bicycling is supposed to be good too, but for me it depends on the type of recumbent bike. The ones at the Y are good, but the one in the exercise room of the clubhouse where I live is hard to get onto. Another thing that is good for so many reasons is a rebounder (mini-trampoline). It takes some getting used to in terms of balance, but it's great for your lymphatic system and is easy on the joints. I can even jog on mine a little, and my knees don't hurt at all.

Water Aerobics would definitely be the best low-/no- impact but it's not always convenient. The recumbant bike is the next best thing but I agree with PhotogGal that bikes vary and some are easier to use than others. Do you belong to a gym that has personal trainers available? If so, have a few sessions with one to get advice on things you can do and always make sure you let them know when there is any pain, not the "Oh my muscles are tired and I want to stop pain."
I had a knee replacement last year due to my arthritis and I used the recumbant during physical therapy. Now, I am on the treadmill walking and some running, using the elliptical as well as the recumbant. The knee replacement was the best thing that happened to me this past year!
Of course, my meds have helped a lot too! They've gotten my pain in check so I take advantage of these pain-free days to be healthier.
If you ever want to chat or be buddies, let me know. I'd be happy chat!

Swimming! Aqua-jogging (jogging in a floaty belt thing in the pool)! Yoga! Tai Chi!
I've never met a cheese I didn't like.

My friend has a permanent leg injury from birth and she LOVES Chair Yoga. You can get DVDs of different levels on Amazon. There are some great reviews of them on there too!
Love the food that loves you back.
Take it one day at a time!
