Power of Vitamin D-- anyone familiar?

I just finished the book The Power of Vitamin D, by Dr. Sarfraz Zaidi. I found it to be an interesting read, but I'm not entirely certain what to think of it-- I'm having trouble finding balanced opinions of his work.

His arguments are compelling. Most people are significantly deficient in vitamin D, which is something that I've heard from many sources (including my own physician.) Vitamin D is a hormone that is vital to quite a few metabolic processes, and deficiency can have some fairly nasty repercussions. I'm not a biochemist, but his arguments feel relatively sound to me. It's consistent with other material that I've read about the topic.

On the other hand, his book has more than a whiff of quackery about it. Whenever I see one thing promoted as the miracle cure for a variety of ailments, I get suspicious. When the author says that (some set of people) don't want you to know about this because (whatever reason, usually because it cuts into their profits), I raise a very skeptical eyebrow. When the author has his own line of products to sell you, complete with his smiling mug on the labels, I pretty much call bull**** on the whole thing. Dr. Zaidi scores a bull**** bingo here.

Even with all of the red flags, his book feels to me like it's probably more true than false.

Anyone have information on this?

I know that vitamin D3 is necessary for the proper absorption of calcium. Also that a deficiency can have an affect on blood glucose levels. This is from my own experience. My doc has me taking vitamin D drops to correct a deficiency. I googled and found the following link which may interest you:

Yes, indeed.

I've been tracking my vitamin D levels and working to bring them up. My last labwork from my doctor had me at just under 20 ng/ml. I started taking supplements and got that up to 26.5 ng/ml. A month later (at 6000IU/day of D3) I was at 40.8 ng/ml. I'm happy with that number.

I'll now do 2000IU/day for a couple of months then have it tested again to see if that's a good maintenance level.

I love DirectLabs.com -- I can order my own bloodwork without having to bother my doctor for it.

I read a lot of stuff about Vit D a few months ago. It makes you think it's a miracle cure for all sorts of things. So I starting exposing myself to direct sunlight for 20 min daily whenever possible and I'm taking multivits and a Vit D supplement. Sadly it has not made any difference whatsoever Sad
I guess it's like with all supplements, they're not miracle cures but they may help to some degree in combination with a change to a healthy lifestyle.

I am using vitamin D-3 and Raspberry Ketones along with my diet and have noticed an increase in energy and maybe contributing to my weight loss. I will continue to use.

It's pretty much impossible to get enough vitamin D unless you get regular sunlight. It's the only supplement I take regularly.
