I have been researching recipes for hummus. I like fresh veggies, but they of course would be better with dip! Anyway, was wondering if anyone else likes hummus and what flavors do you like? Whats the best flavor for someone who never had it, to try?

Sorry I can't recommend a recipe, but I love Sabra brand spinach and artichoke hummus. It's topped with a little bit of salsa. I also love Athenos roasted red pepper hummus.
I eat them both with baby carrots. Yum!

I don't know what eating plan you are on, but I like the White Bean with Basil Hummus from Trader Joes. I don't know if you can call it a true hummus, as it isn't made with chick peas, but it is only 1 carb per tablespoon and very yummy with cucumber slices.

I love all hummus! All flavors. Roasted red pepper and spicy 3 pepper are my favs. I don't have a good recipe though. I haven't really tried to make it. Only purchased it.

Thanks for the ideas everyone! At least I know where to start. I love to cook, so I thought I would try to make this at home. And I may try buying some different kinds also. But I was looking for a dip for my veggies and this sounds like a good try! Thanks again for all the input!

I make my on hummus with a blender or Magic Bullet. One can of garbanzo beans, drained; a heaping tablespoon of tahini (sesame paste); three cloves of garlic; a generous dash of lemon juice; a few tablespoons of olive oil; and a bit of salt. Voila!

I love hummus but I thought that garbanzo beans were high in fat. Good but you can only have about 2TBS.
Actually I use two cans drained, reserve a little juice to thin if it gets two thick, 4 TBS tahini paste, lots of fresh garlic (8 cloves), juice of one whole lemon (strained) and I like roasted peppers or fresh jalapeno's, dash of salt and a little paprika to top. Yum!
If your good a little olive oil.

Love hummus! I always have a tub in the fridge. You can't eat too much of it if trying to lose weight - but it is a good late afternoon snack for me. I like a lot of the Trader Joe options - if you have one of those near you - the three layer hummus is really yummy.
As a snack - I actually like to mix a tablespoon of hummus with a few tablespoons of salsa (often homemade version.
I also discovered a great salad dressing with hummus:
Low-Fat Tahini-Chickpea Dressing (You can play with the ingredients a little - make it spicy, etc)
Ingredients
• 1/4 cup chickpeas or ¼ cup hummus
• 1/4 cup lemon juice
• 1/2 cup water
• 1 tablespoon tahini
• 1/2 tablespoon tamari or soy sauce
• 1 – 2 cloves garlic
• 2 teaspoons ginger-root, minced
• Freshly ground black pepper to taste
Instructions
1. Place all ingredients into blender and process on high speed until thoroughly blended. Refrigerate until well chilled. Dressing will continue to thicken while chilling. Add extra water by the teaspoon if dressing is too thick.
(It's only about 29 calories per tablespoon)

Anyone know where to find tahini? That has always been my roadblock to trying to make my own. I don't know if traditional grocery stores carry it - what aisle would it be found in?
I suppose there may be some specialty markets near me that might stock it.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I love hummus - if making my own would be more cost-effective and/or potentially healthier, I'd love to give it a shot.

I was able to find Tahini at my grocery store! Super Wal-Mart doesn't really seem to carry it, because it's so specialty. I found it near peanut butter... don't ask me why, haha!

I have found it in most big grocery stores. You'll typically find it in the international aisle...asian/middle eastern section. You can get it in a jar or a can. I prefer the jar. The paste settles - so you have to stir well every time you use it. I keep mine in the pantry - not the fridge. It last a long time.
Failing that - you can buy it on amazon.com

Hint: Do not use a blender, the texture of packaged ones sold in stores is actually too fine/creamy. Should be thoroughly mashed by fork etc. Also remember to peel the chickpeas after cooking.

I am not sure about all the new flavored hummus that we see in the market today. Where I came from, Hummus is hummus (garbanzo beans with nothing else) there is no ginger-root hummus neither sundried tomatoes. The Arab style is plain. But I will have to agree Sabra brand (plain) may be best to try.

I enjoy plain hummus, but I think some of the other flavors help "non-hummus" people give it a try.
My husband doesn't like plain hummus at all. I've tried different brands - it just isn't his thing. However, I can get him to eat roasted red pepper hummus. I think for some people the other flavors make it more tolerable.

Manda another option for dipping your vegetables in is Tzatziki (yogurt, cucumber) sauce that's used on gyro sandwiches.

Roasted red pepper hummis and baby carrots are delicious, but its MUCH better homemade. i refuse to eat store bought because it tastes DISGUSTING compared to homemade, probably cheaper that way in the longer run too.
