I've been under the impression that if you burn more calories than you take in you will shed lbs. For the most part this has been working for me. However, I have a calorie deficit of about 7000 for the last 4 days and haven't dropped any weight. Anyone have any thoughts? I understand there is always that "plateau", but I've only just recently started this "change" 3 weeks ago, can I plateau so soon? I'm open to all thoughts and suggestions.....

Im no expert, but there's a possibility that you cut too many calories too soon. I've heard that if you're body feels threatened by extreme calorie deficit, it'll go into panic mode and hold onto the fat. That may be whats going on w/ you.

Do you track ALL your cals? Small bites & everything? I was having the same problem at the beginning, was exercising like crazy and thought I was doing well with calories, then I started to track every little thing and reality hit me! I started to stay within the 1200-1500 range and have been losing ever since.

Fat loss is 80% diet. What does your diet look like?

There are a few possibilities.
One is that you're not, in fact, at a calorie deficit. Unless you track fairly closely - making sure serving sizes are accounted for, weighing out foods, etc. - it's very easy to underestimate calories by several hundred, or even a thousand or more.
Second, you could be expending less energy than you think. Unless you're using a BodyBugg/BodyMedia Fit, or some very expensive medical-grade equipment, the calories you burn will be a rough estimate at best.

If you've been losing weight, and haven't been eating significantly more than usual in the last 4 days, or less active than usual, then it's probably a combination of having a smaller deficit than you estimated, and normal weight fluctuations masking the slower fat loss. It's quite easy to have your weight move up and down 5 pounds within a day, based on water retention and solid mass in your system. You could easily have lost a pound (or more) over the last 4 days, but it's not appearing on the scale, because you're retaining an extra 3 pounds of water.

Have you checked your measurements? Sometimes the scale is slow to show results that you see though other measures. I also find I don't lose weight gradually but instead, drop several pounds at once, so weekly weigh-ins are not very telling for me.

How are you measuring calories burned through exercise? Sometimes your estimates using this website or what the cardio machines at the gym tell you can be overly optimistic.

Are you making sure your portion sizes are accurate? Measuring and weighing things?

Over the course of the week, overestimating how much you burn and underestimating how much you eat can cause yoru deficits to evaporate.

What about water intake? Have you had less water or more sodium in the last 24 hrs? Do you have sore muscles? What about your stress levels, amount of sleep, or time of month? All of these can impact a weigh-in on any given day. A gallon of liquid weighs a whopping 8 pounds, so you can see how quickly a little extra water retention can add up.

Bottom line: Be patient, stick with it. Remember that a plateau is determined by multiple weeks without downward progress, not one! Use measures other than the scale to measure your progress and remember that your body doesn't lose weight in a straight line, so you shouldn't let one bad week take you off course.

Thank you everyone for all your thoughts, questions, opionions, and suggestions. I will take all of this into consideration, its been very educational and eye opening for sure. I think everyone who stated I may be overestimating and underestimating my calories. I only utilize the tools on this website, so I have to consider that the tools may be off as well some of the info I have indicated. I will stick to the plan and give it time. Thanks again everyone!!!!
