Ok. 2 weeks are over. I've implemented everybody's tips- cut down on dairy, cut down on artificial sweetners, upped the veggies, cut out the diet soda...and- nothing! for 3 or 4 days I loose a tiny bit of weight, and then on the 5th day I start gaining it back!!! I'm so frustrated!!! I'm exactly where I started...

it can just take time. I went throught he same in the middle of diet, and got really down about it. Everyone goes through this stage at some point. You just need to stay with it.
On top of that, a loss loss is good, as more chance it will stay off.
Stay positive! ;o)

I actually started 30 Jan 11, and weighed 226lb!

you may not be seeing the scale move, but that doesn't mean you aren't losing. did you take measurements of your body? do your clothes fit better?

You may not be drinking enough water. Try drinking 30 mL per kg of body weight - do that for a few days and see if you notice any changes on the scale. It's very easy to get dehydrated and that will affect the number on the scale.

What everyone else here said, goes.
5 days, even two weeks, is very little time. As much as we don't want to hear it, losing about a pound a week is the only healthy, sustainable way to go - and while we exercize we burn off fat and build lean muscle - so our bodies can get smaller inch-wise while our weights appear to plateau. Don't give up! Do use measuring tape. Really. Talk to doctors, trainers and nutritionists about your frustrations and keep at it. There's a lot of living proof on this sight that patience and diligence are yor best friends. I'm 6 months into daily fitness and clean, restricted eating, 24 pounds down and down a ton of body fat percentage at under 16%.

All the advice posted is very good. Don't give up ! Are you using the newest atkins book ? When I first started I used an older version. The newest book "The New Atkins for a New You" - copyright 2010 - has more foundation vegetables to choose from and a little more lenient. This book also has in the back a week's worth of meals & snacks that are very realistic... If you're not using this book I would advise at least checking it out... Again, Don't Give Up !

You have lost almost 4.5 pounds in three weeks, that's a good thing. Whatever diet you choose it is not to be a quick fix but has to last the rest of your life. As we get older it is harder to lose weight. I am 50yo and have been on WW, counting calories and a multitude of others. I am doing Atkins as a vegetarian and am finally losing weight so it is doable. I have both the 2002 book and the newer one. I have the older one handy and it mentions cutting caffeine intake, you might want to think about doing that. The ‘fat fast’ is a tough one to do it limits calories to 1000 for about five days. Seventy to ninety % of calories is from fat, eat five meals per day with 200 calories each meal. I tried it a long time ago and didn’t last more than a couple of days. No veggie carbs at all and can be dangerous for people that are not metabolically resistant. This info is from the old book I don't know what the new book says about the 'fat fast'. Since you are losing weight I don’t know if that would be a good thing to do.

Read the the information in this thread if you have any questions, ask. The reason you're getting frustrated is because you are ot happy with your diet which makes you not happy in general. Our diets are a huge part of our lives. Eat what you like "if it fits your macros". Sure, try to eat healthy but if you don't, don't beat yourself up. I don't remember the last day I ate healthy 100% of my day. I am down 21 lbs. in 7 weeks and I am not even trying to lose quickly. I am trying to maintain as much muscle as possible.
Love your food or risk failure. No quick fixes, this is a lifestyle change. No extremes are needed just consistency.

From your picture it doesn't appear that you have a whole lot of weight to lose so 4.5 pounds could be a large percentage. I am just starting the Dukan diet (the one that got Kate Middleton so skinny before the royal wedding) It is low carb and low fat and promises 5-10 pounds in the first attack phase (you eat only proteins) then for the rest of you weight loss you alternate protein only days with protein and veggie days - all allowable foods are unlimited! Sometimes we just need to shake things up - but Don't give up!!! We are all here rooting for you
don't let your struggle become your identity!

What your doing might be working, 5 days is just not enough time. I do agree with the IIFIYM post. You are just not enjoying your plan. Diet soda can't make you fat, it has zero calories. If I gave that up while dieting I'd be miserable too.
Just don't give up.

Unlimited! Go all out! LOL, please. I dare you to eat an unlimited amount of the allowable foods, track your calories. Eat 5000 calories worth and lets see if you lose weight. I feel sorry for the misinformed.......

Hi everyone.. Cheliros, please dont give up as everyone hear is right 5 days is nothing.. at the end of the day your body weight can fluctuate up and down by at least 3 lbs due to body water not body fat.
To shed body fat it is best to eat a high protein based diet for at least 4 weeks, this being 50% protein 30% carbs and 20% fat.
Then drop to 40% - 40% - 20%
Bearing in mind that you are exercising during the week. I dont know what exercise you are doing but it has to be varied as the body gets used to the same routine and that is what causes the body to plateau.
Hope this helps any..

Listen, don't give up. Just keep eating what you like, within reason, but eat less of it. Watch the sugar, since that is a killer with everyone's diets. Don't diet, just watch what you eat. Whatever is on your plate, take half of it off. You will soon get use to eating like this. Restaurants give us 2x's what we should be eating anyway. You can do this, just don't quit, and believe in yourself. You are so worth it.
Hang in there.

You are not eating enough. Too much cream and cheese.
You should be getting 12-15 net carbs of veggies a day.

On a personal note, if the 'new diet' fails go back to old school atkins a cut out the carbs, even veggies (a carb is a carb) I'll brace myself for the backlash from this, but it is true. And I have slowly introduced more back as the original atkins calls for (you know the books written prior to the creators death, rather than after?) but while on introduction extreme low carb, minimal carbs, doesn't make sense to me to increase veggies (or carbs of any kind). I drank hot tea, with < 1 carb no sweeteners (10X+ the antioxidants of any veggie) and a vitamin supplement. I ate probably as much dairy as you, more protein, more calories, and more fat... worked for me. I do get that everybody's body is different. I only had about 40lbs to lose when I started on atkins. Think the atkins site is a better resource for new atkin-ers, as they are more open mindeded and experienced. Though that site cna be tough to navigate.

thanks everybody!!! but i have already followed most of the advice given here. i drink tons of water and in addition to it club soda, i get those 12-15 carbs from veggies, i eat the 1500-1600 cals...maybe in the pic i don't look fat,but i am overweight- though my face is long and thin... i need to loose 20 lb in order to be avarage weight, 24 to be where i want. i just did the fat fast and lost about 6 lb in those 4 days, and am hopeful that now, as i'm back to "regular" induction the weight will continue to go down, and even if it does fluctuate, i just don't want it to go up, as what was happening- i just went up and down for two weeks, ending right where i started (and not cheating at all)....

The normal weight for someone your height is between 125 - 164 lb so you are already within normal even if at the top end. I'm the same height as you, very energetic - I do get lots of exercise never walk less than 5 miles a day - and it has taken me 18 months to lose 20 lb eating on average 1600 cal a day. You have lost some weight, OK it isn't much, but only people who are very overweight lose lots of weight fast. I understand your frustration as I frequently think of giving up myself as it's so slow. But keep at it and even if it is slow you will lose weight. I want to lose another 15 lb and I reckon it may take me another year.
Good luck
